The First Lady Tells a Story With Fashion
New York Times ^ | Jan 20, 2009 | CATHY HORYN

No one gets the fascination with Michelle Obama, fashion plate, more than her husband.

Invoking another president with a glamorous wife—that would be, maybe, John F. Kennedy? — President Obama told military guests at the Commander in Chief Ball last night, “I have the special honor of being the guy who accompanied Michelle Obama to the ball.”

That got a big laugh, but it would be a few minutes before the first lady made her entrance, in an ivory chiffon dress. But when she did, oh, what a roar.

It was an amazing day for Mrs. Obama — chic and bone-chilling, and maybe at times her feet hurt. For Tuesday night’s round of balls, she chose a fluffy, many-layered gown by a 26-year-old designer named Jason Wu. The dress had a one-shoulder strap and was flecked with organza flowers and crystals.

If Mrs. Obama is a different and more stylish first lady than the country has seen in a while, she proved it Tuesday with some striking fashion choices. The Wu gown was perhaps not as sophisticated as the coat-and-dress ensemble she wore for the swearing-in, but it still made a statement.

As for her vivid yellow inaugural outfit, it seemed designed to stand out against the traditional red and somber black coats on the Capitol steps.

Here is a bolder woman, a serious woman from Chicago and Harvard who is not afraid to express herself with fashion, and it is the kind of confidence that many women will recognize in themselves. Her clothes tell us that she has an adventurous spirit, as well as a sense of humor, and if some of these garments have almost an old-fashioned womanly quality, then they tell us that she is indeed not your average fashionista.

Let’s just face the truth, that no Democrat woman can ever be as attractive as a Republican woman. Where the ugliest Republican woman ends, that’s where the best looking Democrat woman begins.

We are going to need another bailout fund just to keep up with Michelle’s quest to be the fashionista first lady.
Notice how whenever a republican first lady spends money on clothes or on basic stuff like china plates for the state diners held at the whitehouse, the press paints it like she raping the tax payers.
But when a democrat first lady spends like Imelda Marcos on 5th Ave, they gush over her with stories about how she’s “bringing sophistication and style” to the whitehouse.

and more stylish first lady than the country has seen in a while

What planet are these people on? Michelle is not known as a fashionista. She is a professional and usually dresses like a professional in business suits. The fashion thing doesn't work for her and her athletic build and powerful gait isn't exactly runway stuff.

I think she is very uncomfortable in evening wear and probably wishes she were in jeans and sneekers or a business suit. After ripping her all night, I suddenly feel sorry for her. Having to be paraded across these forums in clothing that just doesn't work for her and stuff that she wouldn't wear, except for this presidential stuff.

She is what she is and her designers should have their heads examined for stuffing her into this stuff.

End of positive comments.... sorry.

And again I ask who is paying for her cloths?

I want to see the MSN investigate this. Not that I really care because no matter what the MSN would never criticize anything about these two

THis would have done it for her. Cover the shoulders and minimize her hight. She needs to call 1-800-get-fashion!

Here’s the story,
Of a nasty lady,
Who was bringing up two very lovely girls.
All of them had hair of black,
Like their mother,
The youngest one in pearls.

Look at the size of those legs on Mrs. Obama!!!! And with those shoulders she looks like a linebacker. I could go on, but I'll stop here.

Laura has and is in better shape, even though she's 16 years older.

That said, with the right clothes and makeup, Michelle would look far more attractive, agreed.

I wonder if they are going to change the seal to his own emblem. After all the train and bus tickets in DC now bare his image

omg, that borders on cruel, but enormously funny.

I promised myself that I would let them have their day, and be polite/civil. The Bush booing ended that.

Michelle Obama looked elegant at the Sunday night concert. Other than that she is one fashion disaster after the other. It’s really rather pathetic. Tonight’s inaugural gown made me wonder if she didn’t have a traditional wedding and got that dress with the train to make up for it?
One day it will be in the Smithsonian. Amazing.

I can honestly say that were I married to a man who became President, I would be just as clueless at dressing myself for those functions. Heck, I'm wracked with indecision about what to wear to any place nicer than the grocery store!

I do feel a bit bad for her that attributes she cannot help, like her height and general proportions are being slammed.

But it is absolutely ASTONISHING, in this day and age, that a woman in the highest political and international circles, with the ability to summon advisers with a simple nod, would not avail herself of the best fashion advice she can get.
