"This administration has had a good, solid record, and I'm very proud of it. I tell people I leave town with a great sense of accomplishment and my head held high.”

—George W. Bush, Jan. 13, 2009

As the 43rd president waves goodbye to Washington, relatively few Americans share his proud assessment of his own presidency.

George W. Bush leaves the White House with one of the lowest approval ratings in history. According to Gallup, only Richard Nixon and Harry Truman, who suffered the double whammy of a bad economy and the unpopular Korean War, had lower approval ratings when they left the White House.

Today, Bush’s legacy to his successor is two unresolved wars, a global image that is deeply tarnished, and the greatest economic crisis in modern times.

Conservatives who backed Bush in two successive elections have little to show for their efforts. Bush, in fact, has decimated the Republican brand.

Bush oversaw the greatest increase in discretionary social spending in history as the federal government usurped new powers in its war on terror. He placed the United States on a global interventionist path for the elusive goal of “democracy.” Ronald Reagan would not be able to recognize the party he knew, which espoused limited government, protection of personal liberty, and the idea that the U.S. should lead globally by example rather than by force.

Harry Truman was a disaster as a President. He is only considered a “good” President because: (1) Extensive history revisionism (outright lies) and (2) most of those who remember him well have died.

But he....he...kept us "safe"! /sarc

If I hear that again from another Bush apologist (or flaming Bushbot), I will puke. They should try telling that to the Americans killed in car accidents caused by drunk illegals and the Americans whose identities were stolen by "God's children."

But he....he...kept us "safe"........

So how did Bush "pull" that off (figuratively speaking, that is)?

Maybe America was "safe" b/c the pukeneos demanded Bush kneel under their desks everyday........or else.

ROTFLOL.

Today, Bush’s legacy to his successor is two unresolved wars, a global image that is deeply tarnished, and the greatest economic crisis in modern times.

All Lies.

We won the war in Iraq despite the defeatists and traitors at home who did everything under the sun to make us lose it. We won because of the great leadership of President Bush and the incredible bravery and professionalism of our US military.

Global image is tarnished by people who hate America or are jealous of America. Everytime we show the world that we are the only superpower our so called allies get very jealous because they know how little and ineffective they are.

President Bush has nothing to do with the financial crisis. It was the liberal democrats who forced banks to lend money to people who cannot afford it.

President Bush has nothing to do with the financial crisis.

Then why was his Treasury Secretary running around promoting bailouts and doing all sorts of other unconstitutional things?

And just why did Bush sign the bailout bills into law?

The last 30 months have been a disaster politically.

And who had control of the purse strings the last thirty months? As soon as the Democrats took over congress, the power base of DC, the perverbial s*it hit the fan in all areas of our lives and the public doesn't know that!!!!

They got control because the R's and Bush did a lousy job promoting the basic tenants of the R party. They also did a very lousy job pushing back on the press, from day one they should have exposed the Dems in everything anti American they did.

I am mad as hell with Bush and the Republicans but am thankful for no attacks on American soil for over 7 years and we have two extraordinary supreme court justices.

Bush's stupidest and most condemnable act was to send Karl Rove to reassure the La Raza racists ... Sap-happy Rove ... Bush/Rove were sucking up to latinos and promising to turn the US into a Third World for their pleasure .... thanks to Bush/Rove creating an "illegals voting bloc" that elected Obama. ... Rove and Bush also made a side deal with Mexico----and now the Mexican government is salivating over getting their hands on more and more US assets..

Karl Rove is a slimy, belly crawling, snake in the grass (its too early for me to cuss). I detest HIM more than then even Gun-Grabbing RINO ROOTY. And not for the above reasons, though they suuuuuure help. My reason is:

Karl Rove helped, aided and abetted in the destruction of the IL GOP and the purging of every Conservative in leadership. Or any conservative who even thought of running for statewide office here in IL. And all this occurred BEFORE our utterly corrupt Governor - no NOT Blago - George Ryan (RINO) was indicted, prosecuted by Patrick Fitzgerald, found guilty on 22 counts of corruption, and sent packing to Federal Prison for the rest of his natural days.
. Karl Rove just happened to be personal friends with *allegedly* corrupt IL GOP leader, 'KJ', whose now caught up in the Rezko-Blago corruption investigations. And it was thanks to Rove, 'KJ', and the other IL GOP RINOs that IL's ex-Senator, Peter Fitzgerald (R-CONSERVATIVE) decided after One Term:
'The hell with it! Fighting the Dems and 'moderates' in DC is hard enough, fighting 'my own' party in IL ain't worth it. I've had it." (2)
As such, Senator Peter Fitzgerald did NOT seek reelection(1) and this gave rise to ... guess who? ... yep, 'senator', Barry Obama!

So when Barry Hussein Obama (or whatever his name is) gets sworn in today as POTUS, everyone can thank one person - Karl Rove!!!

(1) Senator Peter Fitzgerald is NO relation to US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. And Sen Fitzgerald never got support, not ONE dime, from the IL GOP, He had to fund his own senatorial campaign 100%.

(2) Sen. Fitzgerald had to fight like crazy to get Patrick Fitzgerald appointed US Attorney for the Northern Dist of IL (Chi metro area). The crooks in IL GOP didn't want him. The Dems sure didn't want him. And Karl Rove didn't want him (again, to help his buddy. 'KJ'.

**** The above are events and facts as I recall them and are based on news reports over the years published in both of Chicago's two major newspapers (from 1999 on). Rovebots can do your own research.****

Well, you won this argument. By misquoting me, you were able to destroy my side of the issue. Nice going. You’re not worth talking to, so I’m going to stop now. You have drunk the koolaid.

Wrong.

Reagan ran as a true conservative and won twice.

The country is far more conservative than the media would have you believe.

The problem with your theory is that the normally distributed curve you mentioned has a far more conservative mean and median than the media suggest, and the “middle” is not where a RINO thinks it is.

I for one, will not sacrifice the principles that I believe in just to have a win for a “Republican” who will then push policies I don’t agree with anyway.

"....and we have two extraordinary supreme court justices......"

We'll see how "extraordinary" they are when they rule on the constitutionality of Obama's qualification for the presidency.

One or the other or both may turn out to be just "ordinary".....which will translate into "D.C. business-as-usual".

"Betrayed" in the headline is a bit much.

No, that's pretty much how I see it. All of his conservative moments like tax cuts had sunset-provisions. All of his socialist moments are permanent. He did nothing to change the socialist point of view, but actually built more expectations for big government by things like NCLB.

I saw a bumper sticker last week that said “So long, Suckers” and had a picture of George Bush “waving” good-bye . The liberal I was riding with loved it - even though it was on large SUV. Now I wonder...

The problem with your theory is that it is belied by the outcome of this election. You see, the media don’t get to vote.

> Reagan ran as a true conservative and won twice.

And I can recall “true conservatives” laughing at Reagan, questioning his intelligence and calling him all manner of unkind names. Even after he left office.

Aw, be fair! Don’t be a sore loser. I didn’t misquote you at all — if I did, I challenge you to show me where.

I think I did, however, destroy your side of the argument, using logic and good commonsense.

> Nice going.

errrr, Thanks... I think.

You’re going to take your ball and go home, you mean. That’s not very sporting.

I give him credit for keeping us safe after Sept 11 and for two good SCOTUS appointees.

He’s been a disappointment on so many other things and has badly damaged the GOP.

All in all, I think I would give him one grade higher than Jimmy Carter.

The biggest problem with George W. was that he claimed to be a conservative but then governed like a liberal. All the failures associated with liberal policies are now linked to conservatism.

Fortunately (in an ironic sense), when expansion of these failed policies occur under Baraq, at least now, the failures will be attributed to liberalism. Unfortunately, Baraq will take his liberal, loony-tune ideas into foreign policy, one area where Bush did pretty well.

Pray for our nation - we really need it!
