This thread (if it survives the moderators) is meant to be an end of the Republic commemorative. Bracketed by end of the Julian calendar and the Chinese New year, I thought a repository of comments marking the rise of a new leftist messiah to be sardonic and fitting.
Before any FReepers hit the ABUSE button, please look around youself . . . with kooky vanities about just-the-right-puppy-breeds and the non-stop religious scripts and debates abounding on NEWS/ACTIVISM, I thought a simple question about what conservatives were personally considering doing during the promise of a new age of fascism might be worthwhile.
So, given that we're all of a conservative mindset and that (as adults) we all recognize what the next four years (or decade and beyond) might herald, I ask: What are your plans? Where do you plan to go and what do you plan to do in years of the coming darkness?
Well, I just posted this in another thread, and thought it would be appropriate here, too. We should listen to Abraham Lincoln and get our nation to do exactly this...
A Proclamation.
Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the Supreme Authority and just Government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and of nations, has, by a resolution, requested the President to designate and set apart a day for National prayer and humiliation.
And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.
And, insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!
It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
Now, therefore, in compliance with the request, and fully concurring in the views of the Senate, I do, by this my proclamation, designate and set apart Thursday, the 30th. day of April, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer. And I do hereby request all the People to abstain, on that day, from their ordinary secular pursuits, and to unite, at their several places of public worship and their respective homes, in keeping the day holy to the Lord, and devoted to the humble discharge of the religious duties proper to that solemn occasion.
All this being done, in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly in the hope authorized by the Divine teachings, that the united cry of the Nation will be heard on high, and answered with blessings, no less than the pardon of our national sins, and the restoration of our now divided and suffering Country, to its former happy condition of unity and peace.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington, this thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty seventh.
By the President: Abraham Lincoln
William H. Seward, Secretary of State.
God is just and merciful to forgive upon repentance. If not, then expect the full judgment of God...
Atlas shrugs.
Costa Rica?
The Med. Gonna buy a big boat and live around Italy, Greece, France. America is lost without some unbelievable action.
LOL! I wasn’t even born then.
Good plan, but we can only do it as individuals. Frankly, I’m with you - ain’t no hope but that that resides in the hand of God. However, I don’t see much hope that our fellow Americans care much beyond who plays the Super Bowl and where their 401K is going.
Let us pray for an awakening.
Palin/Petraeus is my ideal ticket.
I could’ve gone the rest of my life withOUT that picture.
Cool. I always thought a boat was the last refuge of freedom - provided you can handle it in ocean conditions.
i hope somewhere some Americans might emerge and something worthy of the title.
I was planning on getting a part-time job to supplement our income. Not now. It would all go to the government anyway. I’m going to concentrate on my artwork, gardening and cooking. We used to enjoy dining out. Takeout pizza is the big splurge these days.
Maybe not, but by my thinking your analysis needs an update.
Just sayin.’
Yep typical 0bama voter..
No flame from me. The baby boomers have pretty much messed this country up. Unfortunately I am one of them. Not that I have messed up a lot things, but have been a willing part of what has been created in my early adult years.
The best I can hope for is to shed as much debt and baggage as possible. Maintain the tools I need for survival, even if it means sleeping under bridges somewhere or a wilderness setting. And teach our children the fine points of Constitutional law so they can hopefully be a part of the resurgence of our Republic of America. And try to stay employed, which I am not currently because of the construction down turn, and bad seasonal weather.
If it comes down to resistance of an oligarchy or anarchy basic ideas have been noted. But too many things beyond our control can change a plan. So flexibility is key.
Tuesday I am painting my kitchen.
Wednesday I start the first batch of seeds for the garden. Starting earlier this year than in the past, but plan on getting more in this year than in the past.
I’m Going to be doing some serious editing of what I watch on TV. As soon as I see a program mentioning Obama I’m changing the channel.
No need to watch a 24 hour commercial for Obama.
A national catharsis in 2010 would be nice, but how’re we going to see that if the electorate is zoned out and the biggest opposition party - the pubbies - are trying to service the mushy middle with ‘socialist lite’ politics?
Roger that. I imagine very little will change in my life the next four years. I'll get up, go to work and put in a full day's honest labor. I'll spend my time off with my friends and family. If I need something, I'll buy it. If I don't, I won't. Pretty much the way I've been living my life the last four years.
