NEW YORK Federal investigators said both engines are missing from the US Airways jetliner that ditched into the Hudson River as reports emerged that the pilot who safely landed the aircraft had considered an emergency landing at two airports. Police divers were using sonar to find the engines, which was believed to be in the water.
As investigators scoured the wreckage of the Airbus A320, many of the 155 people aboard recounted survivor stories and hailed the pilot as a hero who delivered them from certain death.
The pilot, Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, was in good spirits and showing no outward signs of stress from the ordeal, a pilots union official said.

LOL.........well, actually we’ll have to surmise he knows where he hit the flock of geese. Interestingly enough, not too many eye witnesses along the river saw the engines on fire so who knows where they dropped off.

I think more likely from contact with the river.
The two engines hanging below the wing are going to have a lot of force applied as they touch the water prior to the plane significantly slowing down.
Combine that with probable damage after the bird strike, thrown compressor/turbine fans, etc.

...I could have prevented this. but New York is the only State where my Birdbuffer is not approved. Hmmm, other airports not using my system, and are aware that it is guaranteed and still use the shot guns, noise makers etc. which dont work, then they may be considered negligent,...www.birdbuffer.com
That yours? Fascinating.

Airbus 320 uses CFMI CFM56-5 or IAE V2500 engines.

As much money as the federal government is throwing around these days, I’d check the engines for green ink and linen paper. It might be a good idea to check for red ink too...

Very true. But how would a flock of geese tear off two engines? Just asking, I don't pretend to know about these things.I do not know about modern engines, but many years ago did tear down a J-48 that had suffered a bird ingestion. There was a ball of bent, detached compressor blades.
So imagine a rotor spinning 30-60,000 RPM, weighing hundreds of pounds suddenly STOPPING.
What kind of motor mount could have kept it on the wing?

The dude inside needs to stop worrying about the dude on the wing, and start worrying about the fact the airplane he is in is a DeHaviland Comet.

Certainly ripped off when it hit the water. In fact, their ripping off is what likely prevented the aircraft from flipping over. Without landing gear or engines hanging down a low wing aircraft is a good ditcher in calm water. Essentially acting like a seaplane.

Forget the engines, there’s about 100 lbs of diced goose meat somewhere between LaGuardia and the Hudson.
