Shell Oil has filed for the first major water right on the Yampa River in northwest Colorado for its oil shale development plans.

Shell applied Dec. 30 in state Water Court to use about 8 percent of the Yampa's peak spring flow.

Shell spokesman Tracy Boyd says the water would be shipped to a reservoir for later use in oil shale production.

It is extremely crucial that this is handled very carefully, though. Any major run-off/pollution would be a tragedy here. The West is already short on water. Aquifiers and wells are dipping across the region as the population grows. Water is definitely a scarce commodity.

On top of this, this is beautiful region. Shell would do itself well to place very strict oversight of the area and make itself popular with the public by handling this regoin with kid gloves while still accomplishing what it set out to.

The destruction of aquifers in the Denver Basin is a sickening tragedy. Mining groundwater is a terribly short-sighted act.

I agree that lots of study and care are required to implement these technologies in a way that does not do more harm than good.
