WASHINGTON President-elect Barack Obama will allow gays to serve openly in the military by overturning the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy that marred President Clinton's first days in office, according to incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
The startling pronouncement, which could re-open a dormant battle in the culture wars and distract from other elements of Obama's agenda, came during a Gibbs exchange with members of the public who sent in questions that were answered on YouTube.

I just recently read somewhere that in a survey 10% said they wouldn’t reenlist and another 5% said they might not reenlist. That is scary!
No doubt. Question is, will this change to current policy be part of Obama's affirmative action agenda? With quotas, no less?
The RATS will just lower the requirements for gays like they did for women.
Would there then be all-gay units?[/quote]
I served in the later days of the Reagan Navy. I was on co-ed Sub Tender. Gays and lesbians were present as well. We had separate berthing compartments for male and female, but no such distinction between gay and straight. So will we need three or four distinctions now? That was always my question. If you are personally gay I don't want you around me during my personal time of dressing and showering. I kicked one flamer in the testicles after making a pass at me while I was toweling off from a shower by my rack. I had witnesses and nothing happened to me then, but I doubt it will not be that way anymore. In my frustration I used to periodically ask my LPO if he would transfer me to the female berthing since I was a technically a lesbian and needed to be with my “own kind”! ;)
Separate but equal? I think not. The RATS will never allow heterosexuals to avoid contact with the disease-ridden sodomites. Instead all soldiers will be required to attend "sensitivity training" to learn all about the virtues of faggotry.
Correction. I meant to type “If you are openly gay”, not “personally”.
In 1992 it was a radical idea. Think about those halcyon days of the early 90s when the first televised lesbian kiss on the Ellen show made the cover of Time magazine. It was a huge deal back then and met with a lot of resistance.
Now fast forward to 2009. Fortune 500 companies commonly have domestic partner benefits, discrimination against sexual orientation is protected in virtually every environment and the bisexual make-out sessions of MTV reality shows are a far cry from Ellen's quick smootch on the lips. The military is just a microcosm of society and when social mores change in the civilian world, they usually follow suit in the military as well.
Good points. I do see the difference now that you put it that way.
I knew two homosexuals when I was in. The first was a lesbian who aggressively hit on other women in the dorm while in tech school; unfortunately, the other women where tolerant of her unwelcomed behavior. This became apparent to us only when she tried to commit suicide by cutting her wrists with a broken light bulb.
The second was one of six guys in the Air Force who have AIDS. For whatever reason, the identity of these six is secret, even to their supervisors (I guess so there is no stigma). We became aware of him when AFOSI (type of police) informed me (squadron commander) that they were investigating whether to charge him with knowingly infecting another man with AIDS (thats a big crime). The man who was infected was his own cousin, also in the military. When the infected man found out AFOSI could put his cousin in jail, he changed his story to say he got infected in a bar downtown. So this homosexual with a lethal disease, who has unprotected sex with other men, is still in the Air Force.
Homosexuality has an adverse impact on our military.
a friend of mine has told me that he will leave if this is the case and he is waiting to be deployed.
I served and know many others who feel like this.
My two sons were wanting to join but have now said they will not if this is the case
this brings nothing good to the military but brings a lot of problems
see my above post on this
it is correct I am just waiting to hear from a friend based on deployment and get his reaction and those with him
This nation is “hanging on a thread”, and I fear God may not allow it to go on (at least in the current form) for much longer..see ya America: You had a great 200+ year run (but you squandered your inheritance late in your life, last 50+ years).
We have been decieved in this nation: unfortunately (I believe there is a demonic spirit of opression and deceipt) on most in this nation: The only answer is to repent and turn back to Christ saved us (if we would turn, repent) and call on His name!
Unfortunately you are correct this is just a reflection of our culture: God where are you, we NEED you and your Son, (Spirit) bring us revival!
Well maybe you two can be strong, and do so. I’ll pray for you!
Gays in the Military, may not be a good idea, but have to say, they have been and are in the Military today.
I see a number of them in my neighborhood.
Marine officers, Navy officers, one an Aeronautical Engineer and enlisted.
I know a WWII Marine Vet, who served on Guadalcanal who is gay and other vets.
#28 on this thread...but you had me at slippery sailors on the thread you were on!!!!
hopefully none of the new recruits will get a crush on your husband...
That kind of PC crapola is ridiculous and can kill people, either in a medical emergency (contact with their blood etc.), or b/c no one around them knows to warn others or object to their behavior if they are still infecting others.
I do realize that issues of privacy and confidentiality can be very sensitive, but this is putting the interests of these six individuals above the safety of everyone around them.
Your right. it is more openly “accepted” now days by the younger troops.
But the simple fact is.. Not everyone appreciates being approached. I retired over a year ago.. and even then the younger troops were saying they did not want gays in.. so its not all universal.
The policy is not a Moral Ground thing.. It used to be there was a fear of “being exposed” as being gay to be blackmail material by foreign agents.
Guess that idea is now out the window. But I still think that the Gay Agenda is stupid really. Rights as a form of sexual preference or orientation or whatever.. its crazy. Whats next.. Pedophile rights?
same here
I know of not one person in the military who wants this.
I asked a friend yesterday well last night about it, he is being deployed soon and he said he will leave the army if this goes ahead.
I sent an e-mail to some friends last night who are serving and here is what one said.
If Obama lets these faggots in then all of us here are getting out.
end quote
this brings nothing but problems and Obama is a complete idiot as those who voted for him
