DNR looking for snowmobiler who ran over, killed 57 ducks

Authorities are searching for a snowmobiler who ran over and killed 57 mallard ducks Tuesday.

Close Authorities are searching for a snowmobiler who ran over and killed 57 mallard ducks Tuesday on a river in Fond du Lac, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The ducks were found in an area of open water and on the ice of the Fond du Lac River near Lake Winnebago, said George Protogere, a DNR warden supervisor.

The snowmobiler apparently skipped over the open water, turned around and skipped over the water again, Protogere said.

The fact that the snowmobiler appears to have intentionally run over the ducks is disturbing, Protogere said.

"You think about wildlife and the journey that they have when they migrate and the ones that stick around with these harsh temperatures, and then all of the sudden they get killed by a senseless act," he said. "It just does not make any sense."

The ducks - 37 drake mallards and 20 mallard hens - were killed sometime between about 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Protogere said.

The duck slaughter comes less than a week after snowmobilers ran down and killed four deer and fatally injured a fifth Friday night in Waupaca County. No arrests have been made in connection with that case, authorities said.

How the hell does a snowmobile “skip” over open water, turn around, “skip” over open water again and surprise 57 ducks, killing them?

Maybe the SM had a vacuum on front that sucked the ducks in and passed them through a Willy Coyote ACME Duck Shredder mounted on the back.

Big pile of BS. Anyone that falls for this garbage is watching too many cartoons.

WTH is going on around here these days?

Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Happy Obamanauguration Day

Don’t know, 57 is a lot of ducks. But it’s cold, they congregate and they get used to the sound of machinery. I don’t know, if it’s 17, or 27 or 37 ducks, the guy is still a jerk, and hopefully gets caught.

Thank you ... I'm just sitting here asking my husband if you make one pass through a group of ducks, the others are going to sit there and wait for you to come back??? This story makes no sense at all. Now I'm trying to imagine skipping a snowmobile over an opening in the ice.

Makes you wonder if the guy writing this article has ever even been outside.

The solution is to get rid of those who prey on us, which requires a higher standard,

I think you may be misunderstanding the outrage on this thread.

You say we need to fight cruelty. I agree. But we need to fight it where we find it. This thread was about a sadistic killing of a freezing raft of ducks. I'll be honest -- had I been there to witness this, this snowmobiler would have been unable to get on his snowmobile after I got through with him.

Now as for crimes against people? What in the world makes you think that I would go easier on someone trying to burglarize my home or rape my daughter? Maybe others yawn (as you suggest) at criminal enterprise, but I don't. And I doubt other FReepers on this thread do either.

Yes, let's fight cruelty. But let's fight cruelty in all its forms.

A few years ago the most popular Wisconsin threads were about throwing out Perrier and getting rid of a local swinger club.

Now it's snowmobilers killing deer and ducks.

I haven't a clue what that means, but someone at Obama's party next week could make a movie about it.

Years ago when my uncle was a forester up in the Nicolet National Forest, in northern Wisconsin, they were asked about commercializing snowmobiles. The men weren't real thrilled about it.

They knew there would be careless drivers who would take liberties.

That’s the problem - when I was on AMTRAK last month going through ND - we saw snowmobile tracks all over the place ... I asked myself why did they do that?

Yep... usually there are designated trails that snowmobiles should be on. Not always the case though.

Most snowmobilers are respectful of the laws, but like anything else you have your idiots out there who should be removed from the gene pool.

Could be that even ducks slow down with the cold....
That they did nor react as quick as the would in the spring or summer

I was takling with a guy yesterday who uses a radio controlled boat to drive the ducks away
The ducks are in the pond bordering his backyard and like to climb up and raid his vegetable garden

Let’s not carried away with: “they killed only what they needed” idea. The “Buffalo Jumps” killed thousands and only a couple of hundred were used for food and hides.

Believe me, a fast moving snow mobile can spin across open water, as long as the open water isn’t too wide. Momentum, combined with a spinning rubber track at 40 or 50 mph will do it. I have done it.

“I think you may be misunderstanding the outrage on this thread.”

I don't think so. The outrage expressed here may be reasonable, in context, and Freeperville is generally populated with a higher standard of people. But in my lifetime I have encountered so many “animal lovers” whose outrage over cruelty to animals is emotion driven, rather than thought driven, and it often dominates the individual, no matter the political or social creed .

No offense intended. But I think the rage is misdirected.
