Obama to end military's ban on homosexuals, spokesman says'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 14, 2009 | Matthew B. Stanhard

President Obama will end the 15-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy that has prevented homosexual and bisexual men and women from serving openly within the U.S. military, a spokesman for the president-elect said.

Obama said during the campaign that he opposed the policy, but since his election in November has made statements that have been interpreted as backpedaling. On Friday, however, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, responding on the transition team's Web site to a Michigan resident who asked if the new administration planned to get rid of the policy, said:

"You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes'."

The little-noticed response, made in a video posted on change.gov, made barely a ripple outside blogs focused on the gay community, but that's not surprising, said those who have been pushing to overturn the ban. Not only was Obama's position expected, they said, but support for reviewing or repealing the policy has grown markedly in recent years, including from some unexpected quarters.

The end of "don't ask, don't tell" may not happen immediately, several critics of the policy said. Although they appreciate clarity from Obama on the issue, they anticipate that the demands of the economy and two wars are likely to trump a speedy policy reversal.

"The question isn't if we do it and the question isn't when we do it, it's how we do it," said Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek, whose 2006 bill to repeal the ban earned broad support among Democrats in Congress but did not move forward in the face of a near-certain veto by President Bush.

"I'm going to reintroduce the bill in the next few weeks," Tauscher said. "We've got the American people behind us."

I notice that, despite the ban resulting from an action by Congress and a signature by a President, it’s still continually referred to as the “military’s” ban.

"Thank you stay at home conservatives and third party voters. Boy your protest votes really furthered your conservative agendas. You own this train wreck."

I tend to place more blame on those that voted for this mess. If those conservatives and 3rd party voters you spoke of had all voted for McCain, it still wouldn't have been enough for McCain to win.

I took karate as the only straight woman in a women’s dojo. I never had any problem or feelings of discomfort in the locker room or grappling situations. Never saw any hanky-panky. The other women treated the dojo with the respect it deserved. Now in a 24-7 situation like the military, I suppose there could be problems. But based on my experience, I wouldn’t object to serving with lesbians.

I’ll let men judge from their experience if there would be a problem serving with male homosexuals.

Then there is the whole issue of heterosexual male aggression directed at women, but the military seems to live with that.

Even if McCain did win, the votes would be recounted till he lost.

We have lost our country and have no one to blame but ourselves.

A people unwilling to use violent force to keep their liberty do not deserve freedom or liberty.

well as a man who has served for a number of years recently I can tell you that not one person I know wants this and some will leave because of it.

In the military we live in close quarters, we share showers toilets rooms etc.

There is no way I would want a homo anywhere near me at all and neither does anyone I know in the service still.

said earlier that my two sons wanted to join but will not now.

This is the destruction of our military and the homos are wanting folk to turn around who has not served to say well I know a couple and they seem nice and not a problem

Don't forget about the “Civilian Security Forces” he promised. I'm sure they will soon be on patrol, looking for “environmental crimes”, violations of all kinds, like those hiding firearms after they are required to be licensed and declared.

I'm also sure that children will be able to report their parents and have them locked up for what ever their little brainwashed heads desire.

This will become “Red Dawn” in real time.

Trust me, as a former infantry grunt. No way, no how will homo’s ever be accepted no matter how much the PC crowd tries to push. It’s free porn for the homo and nothing more.

The UCMJ has a lot of ways of dealing with “behavior”, but it will be up to the officers to enforce any “conduct unbecoming”.

Lots of opportunities for puns there.

Anyway, enlistments, re-enlistments and contract renewals will drop as well as applications to the academies but that is what they want. That way, the social experimentation can be moved into the military with little to no resistance.

In God you trust?

The lord is certainly to be less supportive of the troops should you do this.

The accursed thing in the camp scenario. . .

Just like the accursed thing about to take office

Tauscher said. “We’ve got the American people behind us.”

Speak for yourself queer boy... The only people behind you are faggots hoping to relieve your constipated brain.

What a rump swab.

Can we please have a military coup to rid us of these political weasels before they completely destroy the military and the country?

You know good and well that when one of them loses control and makes advancements on one of his corps members, it will stir up the unit to a chaotic level.

This is the very reason that it has been so forbidden throughout it's history. Our fighting men do not deserve this kind of humiliation.

I am also a Service man and fought in a foreign war. It has NO place among us. And SHAME on this nonmilitary Civilian who thinks he can tamper with the greatest fighting force since the Romans.

brytlea,
I’m a Florida boy just down the road west of Port St. Lucie.
I’ll tell ya in time of war you worry more of the guy next to you protecting you, not worrying about his sexuality.
War times are short and the down time is long. That is when you will have problems.
You will see a rapid decrease in the morale and readiness of our services.
You will see big problems.

Nice photos by the way,
Keep it up.

Can we rather have an “accident” in the White House... say on January 22?
