George W. Bush, Winner
American Spectator ^ | 1-14-09 | Lisa Fabrizio

Posted on 01/14/2009 2:16:25 PM PST by STARWISE

Friends, Americans, conservatives; lend me your ears. I come to praise George W. Bush, not to bury him; I'll leave that to our famously unbiased media.

*snip*

We can also be pretty certain that his departure will not feature the ransacking of the Oval Office and Air Force One, or the sophomoric removal of the "O's" from White House keyboards.

If, as has been the case for his entire presidency, he is true to his word, he will be as magnanimous to his successor as he was to his predecessor; notwithstanding the disrespect he received at the hands of both.

Bush was a true Commander in Chief...troops don’t follow someone they can’t respect and they loved him cause they knew he cared about each and everyone of them!

Thank you Wolfstar, for all the beautiful memories. I have often thought that the last part of his first inaugeral speech was one of the most beautiful speeches I’ve ever heard. I think those words will go down in history like the Gettysburg address. The words about the angels and the whirlwind.

I think that must have driven the Left nuts, because they are so used to seeing conflicts in shades of gray, they don't believe in clarity.

It sure did. What really drove them over the edge, though, is when President Bush basically told the UN that it would be irrelevant if it didn't act. No one tells the Left's pet pseudo world government it's irrelevant without risking exactly the crazed hatred we've seen ever since.

Bush was a true Commander in Chief

Yes, absolutely. As if often the case with English words, "true" has several meanings. The two that fit here are:

Fully realized or fulfilled -- President Bush was the full realization of what a commander-in-chief should be, following in the footsteps of our first CIC, George Washington.

That which is the case rather than what is...assumed -- a great many people assumed that the twisted caricature painted of this man by the media was true. It was not. Rather, the case is what we see in these photos and read in his quotes. That is the true essence of this great man.

After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: ``We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?''

Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.

We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.

Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.

This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.

God bless you all, and God bless America.

An angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm. Those are wonderful words. I also noticed that he used the word "civility" at least six or seven times in his speech. We can truly say that his was a presidency of civility on his part. Sad that it was not reciprocated.

You are so very welcome, WVNan. I could not agree with you more about GWB's beautiful, lyrical First Inaugural Address. I memorized those closing paragraphs almost instantly after first hearing them, and have quoted them often through the years. I did so earlier on this thread. Please see Post #67 here.

Given the events that occurred just over 7 months later, I am continually struck by the prophetic nature of this Address. I don't think GWB's First Inaugural gets the credit it deserves, mostly because the media only credits Democrats with being able to deliver a great speech.

Pres George W Bush is a good, decent man and he has kept us safe for eight years. All the rest is noise. He has been treated horribly.

Sigh...most of the American public has no clue about these significant differences. I'm glad those of us who followed GWB's presidency closely got to see these events, though.

I am in tears now from listening to his farewell speech. What a good good man. We will sorely miss him, as will the nation.

Hey, they've always known that Mom and Dad were a little different, but they love us, and still come home for visits, even voluntarily!

When our #1 son was in Law School, he was home for vacation and actually thanked us for not pushing him so hard when he was in high school. He said he had friends at school who literally couldn't stand their parents, because they'd been so hard on them in high school to get good grades so they could possibly get scholarships. Our #2 son said the same thing over Christmas; that he was amazed as how many folks his age just didn't LIKE their parents. Made us feel good, I gotta say! ;o)

Hi Purple. You're so very welcome. :)

If there is going to be an offical goodbye thread on FR, I'll repost it all there, and more. I'll never love and respect another president the way I love and respect this one.

So true, and sadly, many career bureaucrats in the State Dept. felt the same way.
