I seem to recall reading that we are coming up on a fairly regular flip of the north/south. I have heard there is some concerns the flips are correlated to the series of mass extinctions. Since a flip could result in a temporary opening to allow in a significant radiation I can see the plausibility.
I gotta go dig the books out again to be sure....darn.

Just imagine what sorts of taxes liberals would impose in the event of a magnetic field pole-flip, if they want to impose a multi-trillion-impact Kyoto treaty to fight the phantom of anthropogenic global warming.

Check out the book I referenced. When a full magnetic reversal occurs, the magnetic field may be at very low levels for a significant periods (months or years). During that time, high energy radiation is free to strike the earth with little resistance. Felix presses his point further to suggest that strong magnetic excursions might be initiating nuclear explosions near the earth's surface. That would account for the layers of "nano diamonds" found at the extinction boundaries.
Felix does a great job of documenting his theory in the book. You could spend months just crawling through the bibliography.
