" If Yellowstone blows to the magnatude that some are predicting, it wouldn't be just Wyoming, but several surrounding states that would need to be evacuated. I was born close to this area and it has provided a pretty darn good life for me. It seems like it should be abouat as good as place as any to leave this world. Don't sweat the evacuation. "

This is from the Star-and-Sickle, which is declaring bankruptcy, right?

They're just hoping that a mega-eruption will allow them to keep publishing their rag /sarc>

Cheers!

This is really starting to worry me. I know there has been activity there for years, but it’s increasing like labor pains (not a biblical reference, just a reference intensity).

Does anyone think this could really be ready to go?

And if it does, could it be a minor eruption? Is that possible? Just a small (big of course, but not like nuclear winter big) eruption that is more local than over half the country?

So, what would be the ideal Doomsday vehicle for such a Mad Max scenario?

one of the quakes was centered at a depth of 37 MILES
Thanks george76. That seems far down, but it's pretty common I think.

Aloha George!

Yellowstone may well go off and since it's an Andesite volcano, it'll probably be explosive ala Mt St Helen's.

That caldera was formed some 600,000 years ago from super volcanic eruption but it doesn't mean it'll happen that way again.

There's a caveat to this simplistic down play of destruction though. I don't have on hand the records of snowfall or melt in the Rockies or the Grand Tetons this winter but if the floods in the Northwest is any indicator, there could be trouble. Water and magma causes underground steam pockets which build pressure to explosive levels. After the explosion the magma has an escape vent which will probably give the caldera a new floor. And I wouldn't want to be in the area if that happens.

I found this handy to track the earthquakes in and around Yellowstone Lake.

We are overdue for another Yellowstone eruption. This is also the sort of volcanic activity that blocks out the sun to precipitate a new Ice Age, to boot.
