HOUSTON (AP) — President George W. Bush told a group of Texas reporters Friday that he regretted immigration policies were not reformed while he was in office.

"I'm very disappointed that it didn't pass," he said in an interview with correspondents from his home state. "I'm very worried about the message that said, 'Republicans are anti-immigrant.'"

What makes a party? Voters. The fact that you didn't even have a "conservative" candidate should tell you volumes.

Again proving my point. The voters left because the GOP's platform of appeasement to illegals was too much to stomach. Keep it up. You are making my argument stronger with every post.

Dallas surely is different, and seems more different every time I visit.

You’re right...the damage is done.

I hope he notices...

Sadly McCain would have shoved immigration down our throats also...thus ensuring a permanent Dem majority. We can’t win.

All those on this thread saying we'll be worse off with Obama on the immigration issue are wrong. The Republicans are more likely to fight Obama hard on the issue than they would have McCain. It will all depend on whether some of the Dem senators who opposed it in 2007 oppose it again.

Immigration was an albatross hung around the GOP’s neck. The perfect wedge issue.

Sorry, that so wrong. It's an issue they embraced with open arms. It's been Bush's pet project from day one. If it was an Albatross it's one they clamped onto gleefully.

Political reality dictated what could be done about illegal immigration, and illegal immigration was not a campaign issue in 2000, 2004, or even 2008.

Bush didn't have the same stand as Democrats, he was the one insisting on enforcement first, fencing, fines and back of the line. (you are fixing to see what the Democrats stand is).

You can’t get enough votes with YOUR conservative litmus tests.

More complete nonsense for you. So, what's the formula for success? All the RINOs in blue states are going to turn their deep blue states to voting for RINO Republicans instead of Dems?

You really need to study the past few elections. The most conservative states are red states, and have consistently supported the Republicans.

The only way RINOs can win the presidency is: continue to insult and belittle the conservatives and turn a blue state or two, but the conservatives give undying support to the RINO candidates regardless.

And, several analyzes have shown that 6,000,000 conservatives stayed home this past election day, as happened in 2006. See if you can put it together.

In favor of Democrats that were far worse on the issue? I don't think conservatives would be that stupid. I like to believe that there just aren't as many conservatives as you think.

You can’t just disagree with his positions

Actually, I can and have.

you have to get down in the gutter like the left and name-call.

I don't have to, I choose to. I choose to call a traitorous piece of trash 'trash' because that's what he is and that's about all the mods will allow.

If he’s trash what in the hell does that make you?

Someone who was fooled into voting for him. Since you obvioulsy still support this POS, what's that make you?

You forget that GWB was elected and served both his terms with exactly the same policy on immigration.

More nonsense. Show us links where W proposed legalization for illegals during either the 2000 or 2004 campaign. Kerry advocated amnesty, but W lied and said he opposed it during a debate.

All Bush talked about during campaigns was closer relations with Mexico.

Anyone that supports me 75% of the time is my friend. If I can't get what I want this term, I fight to improve my chances next term.

I don't take my ball home when I lose.

He insisted on enforcement for years all the while leaving the border open. How does that work?

You are correct that congressional Republicans are now much more likely to fight amnesty since the GOP does not have an albatross around its neck in the name of a “GOP” president who supports amnesty anymore.

Are you sure?

Indeed, in an election that was touted to produce a record turnout, it didn't happen. Three million fewer votes were cast than in 2004. Obama drew 4 million more votes than Kerry...McCain drew 7 million votes fewer than Bush.

Tell me: what happened to the conservative vote?

Bush wasn't pushing for "amnesty"? With McCain, Kennedy and the Democrats?

Who was that guy masquerading as the President then?
