NEW YORK It is perhaps the most intriguing unsolved mystery from the gaudy gangland career of John Gotti: Whatever happened to the neighbor who accidentally ran over and killed the mobster's 12-year-old son and then vanished?
According to papers filed this week in Brooklyn federal court, John Favara was shot to death on orders of the outraged Gambino crime family chief and his body was dissolved in a barrel of acid. Authorities said a cooperating witness identified Charles Carneglia, a 62-year-old former mobster, as the perpetrator in the 1980 incident.
The court documents said Carneglia told another informant that acid was "the best method to use to avoid detection."
Those details, in a 44-page evidence motion by federal prosecutors for a racketeering trial, offered a new twist on the fate of Favara, a 51-year-old furniture warehouse worker who lived near the Gottis in the Howard Beach section of Queens.
Favara was arriving home from work on March 18, 1980, when Gotti's son Frank, riding a minibike, darted in front of his car. The driver told police he was momentarily blinded by the sun and did not see the boy.
The crash was ruled an accident by police, but Favara was subjected to death threats and harassment for months. His car was stolen and later smeared with the word "murderer," and he was threatened by Gotti's bat-wielding wife when he tried to apologize.

This was even sadder because the neighbor adored the kid, but everyone knew it was doom for him.
Are you kidding?
The police at all levels will be quick to whine that they can't protect you, they can only act after a crime has been committed.
They do, however, a sterling job of hauling away your remains. Unfortunately, in this case...
Did they kill the guy before they dumped him in the acid?
I don’t know if that’s true but in one science fiction/comedy movie,
one character met his demise that way. In “Innerspace”,
an astronaut and his spaceship are miniturized and accidentally injected into the body of a grocery clerk.
Another miniturized man is injected into the clerk’s
bloodstream as well, and he tries to kill the astronaut.
The astronaut (Dennis Quaid) has a way to talk to the
clerk (Martin Short) whose body he’s in.When Quaid is
in the stomach, the “bad guy” tries to get at him and he gets knocked off and falls to his death—in the churning
clerk’s stomach acid.
Short’s character: “What happened to the bad guy?”
Quaid’s char.: “You just digested him.”
Short’s character: (BELCHES)
:)
Don't know.
But they shot him the customary 47 times, so the guy was gonna die of lead poisoning anyway.
Makes me wonder about Stacy Peterson.
Yep, ♫ "[he] should have seen this coming at [him] like an atom bomb." ♫
Wondered that myself. She most likely met this same fate and will never be found...................
“And the neighbor didn’t move and change his name? “
That was my first thought.
The phrase ‘scared to death’ comes to mind, especially after the death threats. Poor man.
Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emperor, was placed in vinegar in a pickle barrel so that his promise to go to Jerusalem could be fulfilled.
“And the neighbor didn’t move and change his name?”

From wiki:
in the months after the accident, the word “Murderer” was spray painted onto Favara’s car. On May 28, Victoria DiGiorgio Gotti, Frank’s mother, attacked Favara with a metal baseball bat, sending him to the hospital. Favara decided not to press charges and planned to move out of Howard Beach.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), on July 28, 1980, before Favara and his family were able to move, he was shoved into a van by several men near his work.
Jeffrey Dahmer bought a barrel of acid from the local hardware store for the same purpose. It works.
God’s way of telling you to move out.
I recall reading somewhere that immediately after the accident, Carneglia tried to go to see the Gotti family to apologise, but was turned back again and again by the “bodyguards”. He said they told him that Gotti knew it was an accident, but was too broken up to talk with him (Carneglia) about it. In the meantime, Gotti himself was telling family that he couldn’t believe Carneglia didn’t even have the courtesy to come over to apologise.
The grown boyz would just a couple of punks.
Mom was a bimbo with cash but no class or style.
And I always thought John Gotti was a white-man?
It could've happened that way... Really...
Seriously, the acid wasn't at the Gotti's and Howard Beach is an area of private homes. The area is known for Gotti types.
