Air car may blow in next year (runs on compressed air!)

The Air Car, made by French company MDI, could be launched by Tata Motors in India by 2010-11.

Replying to an email query, the French company said, "We will release in France the first cars for the Air France company before June 2009. The cars will be available for the public at the end of 2009."

Mumbai-based Tata Motors, India's third biggest car manufacturer had signed a licensing agreement with MDI for manufacturing the car in India. The agreement between the two envisages development and refinement of the technology.

The Air Car doesn't require traditional fuel options like petrol, diesel, or gas and is driven primarily by compressed air. However, the company has also developed an alternative means to power the car using a combination of air and petrol, diesel or ethanol, just like a hybrid.

"Tata Motors has not finalised any timeframe for deployment of the technology of engines powered by compressed air. Tata Motors is licensed to deploy the technology only in India. As and when we have any details of deployment in India, we will share them with you", said the company's spokesperson through email.

MDI has developed several models of the Air Car designed to accommodate two to six passengers. A typical three-seater car, which had been unveiled earlier, is about 2.65 metre in length (smaller than Nano, which is 3.1 metre) and 1.62 metre wide (wider than Nano).

The price of the car will be unveiled at the launch, but, according to the company's website, its price may range from Rs 233,000 to Rs 869,000.

Consumers can use an air compressing device at home or take it to a filling station to fill compressed air. The car is emission-free.

A Mini Flow Air (as labelled by MDI) can travel up to 180 km under urban conditions on mono energy, which is, only compressed air, and up to 1,500 km on dual energy on the highway consuming, just 1.8 litres of petrol.

In addition, the top speed on the mono energy car will be 110 km an hour. On dual energy, it can do 130 km an hour, according to the company.

Not that crap again!

This thing has been ready for production for nearly 15 years now.

Every 6 months it gets recycled.

It has to be one of the longest running scams.

BTW, they own Jaguar and Land Rover.

Same people, same car, same claims.

These folks have been making all sorts of claims for a very long time.

2 stories from 2000, and it was already an old claim at the time.

They had many factories, including US factories, and many orders, including thousands ordered by Mexico for taxis in Mexico City.

Time ( March 23, 1998 )
by James Geary

In Brignoles, France, engineer Guy Negre has invented an engine that not only runs on thin air, but improves air quality to boot. Negre’s Zero Pollution Urban Taxi covers about 200 Km on 300 L of compressed air, which is stored in tanks similar to those used by scuba divers. In addition to a combustion chamber, the Z.P. taxi has an expansion chamber that compresses air at high temperatures. A small quantity of this compressed air is then injected into the combustion chamber at room temperature, producing a rise in pressure sufficient to drive the motor’s cylinders. Designed specifically for inner cities where stop-and-go traffic accounts for a significant portion of polluting emissions, Z.P. vehicles inhale a fresh supply of air in about a minute at specially equipped service stations or recharge in four hours at home using a small electric compressor. The zero-pollution cars are also fitted with a carbon filtering system that sucks in dirty air during braking. The result: air emitted by the Z.P. engine is actually cleaner than that of the surrounding environment.

But it may take even longer to persuade automobile manufacturers to build it. Car companies “have a set mentality”, he says. “The have already spent a great deal of money on the electric car, which turned out be heavy and expensive. They don’t want to listen to another new idea.” The Mexican government, on the other hand, is all ears. It’s backing an order for 40.000 Z.P. Taxis to replace the gasoline and diesel models in Mexico City, which suffers from probably the worst air pollution in the world due to its high altitude. Mexico’s City first pollution-free taxis will hit the streets in two years. while they are not yet ready to displace fossil fuels, zero-pollution vehicles can still play an important role in reducing the level of greenhouse gases. “If we start with taxis, then move to buses and vans, “ Negre believes, “it will take very little time to improve the pollution problem in our cities.”

How are you going to compress the air? Compressed air is an energy storage medium, like a battery, it is not a "primary" energy source. Compressed air can produce enormous energy density, at say 7000 psi, but it is tricky to handle and expensive to produce.

The Compressed air cars are kind of cool but the problem is that it is far more efficient to just use the electricity directly and bypass the energy lost in compressing the air.

Electric cars perform far better as well. Electric cars require a battery and the technology hasn’t quite developed in the area as yet. That is the only slight advantage a CAC would have on electric.

How are you going to compress the air?

If you lived "uphill" from work, your CAC car would compress the air needed to get back. :)

Yeah. This silly idea crops up just about every six months.

Some years ago I had a job where I used this amazing handheld precision grinder that ran on compressed air. I was astounded that it could develop one horsepower in a really tiny package.

Man; I was impressed. I really loved that tool, was going to get myself one for my home workshop.

Then I discovered that it took an 8 horsepower air compressor to make it run at full power and speed. using 8 HP to get a continuous 1 HP is just not practical for individual use.

The longer running scam would be the hydrogen car. That was being studied in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, etc, etc, etc.

I ran the physics of this car. Considering the energy input as compared to claimed energy output, the car is running at 11,000% efficiency. I am thinking of getting one to power my house.

Yee-ha!! 1500 kilometers is 932 miles. On less than a gallon of gas?

Just Damn.

Yes, and I can't wait for the Muslim yoots in France to torch one of these cars. Actually, the result might make them look for something new to burn.
