Lawmakers Begin New Session With Labor Bills

The House has passed legislation to assure that employers live up to their four-decade-old legal promise to provide equal pay for equal work.

Democrats led lawmakers in approving a bill making clear that women who are victims of gender-based discrimination can sue for compensatory and punitive damage.

The chamber was also voting on a bill in response to a Supreme Court decision that workers must file a discrimination claim within 180 days of a pay violation.

Supporters of changing the law said many workers don't find out about wage disparities for years.

The two bills, coming in the first week of the new Congress, attest to the worker rights agenda of the Democratic-led Congress and the incoming Democratic president, Barack Obama.

A long time lurker and a first time poster, I noticed this article in a newsletter. Working in manufacturing, I was interested about when the various labor changes would come around for votes. These are the tip of the coming iceberg.

It was good to see Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn state: "it's little more than an earmark for the trial bar". It was disapointing that Anh Cao [R]-Louisana voted for it.

FOrget it. Repubs are Dem-lite's.

At least half the repubs are going to vote for any bills the Dems are gonna put on the agenda.

Simple solution - don't hire women.

What ever happened to the good old American way: “Don’t like your job? Quit.” “Can’t afford to quit? Then shut up and get back to work.”

So can employers now sue their female employees if the produce less than their male counterparts? It should work both ways shouldn't it?

Meanwhile our economic house is on fire and these morons are doing their best to make it worse... The endless suing of the wealth and jobs creators until they do neither anymore...

The Demagogues and RINOs are going to go hog-wild with stuff like this and much much more. Our only hope is that they over-reach enough on some high-profile issues that the backlash can begin in 2010.

Sadly, as they proceed to blast open the southern border with Shamnesty etc. they will add significantly to the prospects for a long-term socialist majority.

If these SOBs start coming after mfg jobs we are just gonna close down. Been in the business for over 27 years and keep saying we’ll go on for another couple of years. I am desparately tired of playing babysitter to employees that due nothing but chic chat about each other and come running to me to complain when they get caught. Thankfully, we can afford to pay off all vendors and employees and just close down. My boss hasnt taken a salary in over a year to help the business. We will see..... Only problem is I’m too young to retire...

Lawmakers Begin New Session With Labor Bills

and everything else on the Democrats wish list, knowing after the $700 billion bail-out, they can pass anything by offering Roy Blunt and the Republicans a tax payer funded back-scratcher(Blunt was the one that came out after meeting with Pelosi to announce they had a deal)

The La rep campaigned pretty much as a liberal Republican. Given his constituency you should not expect him to do anything remotely considered conservative.

LOL! Yeah, the deal Nancy offered the House Republicans was shut up and sit in the corner. If you don’t piss me off I’ll let you go to the cafeteria at lunch.

What ever happened to the good old American way: “Don’t like your job? Quit.” “Can’t afford to quit? Then shut up and get back to work.”

Now that's a chorus worth repeating. Amen to that.

Add to that:

"Can't bring yourself to shut and get back to work? Then go into business for yourself."

Or my dad's favorite (in case you've never had the pleasure, NOTHING compares with having to work for your dad! lol): "I am not paying you to be happy; I am paying you to WORK!"

Dad's. lol I think everyone should have one. :)

We are headed for an inflationary economy, and the very same workers will be complaining that their wages don’t keep up with inflation.

I’ve always thought a sign like that would be fun at a labor protest.

>>The Paycheck Fairness Act ... also puts the burden on employers to prove that any disparities in wages are job-related and not sex-based

Guilty until proven innocent. This bill turns two centuries of American jurisprudence on its head. Perhaps some lawyer here can tell me if there is ANY other law on the books which demands the presumption of guilt.

Atlas Shrugged ... Prophecy?

A prophecy for some, a blueprint for others, and something they cannot find in the local B&N's/Border's map section for wayyyyyyyy to many others.

Maybe we should look into a run of "WWJGD?" hats for intersted FReepers?
