Hacktivist tool targets Hamas
DDoS street protest covers both side of Gaza conflict
Israeli cyberactivists are inviting pro-Israeli surfers to install a tool that attacks websites associated with Hamas.
This "Patriot" tool effectively turns the computers of sympathisers of the Israeli cause into zombies - albeit willing, complicit ones - in the control of Israeli hackers.
The hackers are working under the banner of the Help Israel Win collective, which was formed last month at the start of the conflict in Gaza. "We couldn't join the real combat, so we decided to fight Hamas in the cyber arena," one of the group's organisers, 'Liri', told Wired.
The package developed by the group is designed to overload websites associated with Hamas, such as qudsnews.net and palestine-info.info, with spurious traffic. Israeli hackers claim that 8,000 have downloaded and installed the Patriot software.

The site went down for about a week, back up now.
I dunno — doing bad things like hacking for a good cause makes me uncomfortable.
How many U.S. citizens would let their own gubmint into their system? Now a foreign gubmint wants in? I don’t think so.

If one was to choose to engage in such activities, it would be wise to do so only with a spare junk computer safely firewalled from the rest of your network and scrubbed of any personal information...
Even then there are risks of course!
Sometimes it’s justified to do bad things to bad people I think. Intelligence agencies do this kind of thing and worse all the time, though of course they have government sanction. No telling what kind of legal troubles one would run into here, especially with the Obamunists trouncing up the White House steps.
Actually I’m surprised that Israel is leaving this kind of thing to citizen groups. I would think Mossad or some agency would have killed these sights before the bombing started. Maybe they are too busy with the real fighting though.
Truthfully, I would probably do it if the U.S. was at war and asked for citizens’ help. But Israel is an ally — a good ally with many mutual interests/concerns — but not the 51st state.
