Bush cautions GOP to stay open-minded

Down to single digits in his days left in office, President George W. Bush is warning the Republican Party not to become "anti-immigrant" as it regroups from defeat and retools its leadership.

"It's very important for our party not to narrow its focus, not to become so inward looking that we drive people away from a philosophy that is compassionate and decent," the departing president said in an interview broadcast Sunday, nine days before his term ends. "My call for our party is to be open-minded."

funny isn’t it in a sad way that Bush is now thought of by many here just like he was in 2000 election when he was beat up here bigtime before he became the only option.

like pappy said...”trust yer first instincts son”

They are NOT FELLOW CITIZENS! They are CITIZENS of other countries...many of them enemy countries. What part of that can’t you understand? Are you a citizen of this country? Legally?

A citizen, yes he is, one who has often admitted profiting from the illegals.

calls us bigots because we want the laws upheld.

“McCain’s support for amnesty was such a great draw to him in 2008 wasn’t it?”

The “economical collapse” killed McCain in 2008, not his position on immigration.

When a small segment of the population breaks the law, they are fined, arrested, tried, etc..

When MILLIONS break the law....and they are tolerated [sanctuary counties and states], then it is not a valid law.

For example, the 55 mph speed limit is a joke...when everybody knows the police give a 10 mph excess before they even glance at you.

The governments cannot suddenly ‘get religion’ when the target is a peaceful hardworking family with children who know no other country is involved.

IMO, that’s what is the essence of Pres. Bush’s warning.

We cannot afford to be painted as anti-immigrant...and that’s what the hostile MSM toward conservatives will do.

After illegal aliens are given amnesty and the vote, we can say hello to our Democrat run future.

“We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We’re a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture."

"For years our nation has debated this change — some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.”

-- George Bush, campaign speech in Miami, August 25, 2000

Donna, good find!

He never did "get" it, did he? We're not debating Latin culture. I like Latin culture & music & food & art as much as the next person. We've been debating about "illegals", not about the culture. Even back then he confused the two issues. As he still does.

They are a revenue stream without making them citizens. But you’ve also got to consider the revenue stream being paid out to them for all the social services they suck up.

Wonder if Obamanation will pick up on this.

It's win win for us. We create jobs and lessen latino vote which overwhelmingly votes Democrat 79% last time.

For the Dems it's more complicated, they get jobs but lose votes. I bet they choose votes.

This is all a fait accompli now, unless whites nationwide start voting like in Mississippi or Utah or South Carolina or Wyoming, it's all over. We have allowed a Democrat lock majority to march illegally into our country and change it forever without a shot fired.

A consequence that no doubt pleases quite a few on this forum. If it's that bad here, think how much the rest of the nation loves the new demographics.

What an utter disappointment this man has been. What's worse is the realization that he was seemingly the best choice when he was elected both times.

Sadly, you're right he was the best choice both elections. In 2008 McLame was the best of the 2 in the general election only this time instead of the lesser of 2 evils we got the outright Marxist. The GOP needs another Reagan and it aint out there. Sarah Palin was a glimmer of hope, the left saw that and trashed her mercilessly so she'd be no threat in 2012. I hope I'm wrong, but I believe she's smart enough to want nothing more to do with the RINOs in the national GOP and she'll just stay in Alaska where the majority think she's great.

After illegal aliens are given amnesty and the vote, we can say hello to our Democrat run future. The electoral votes in the southwest will not belong to Republicans.

I fear we won’t be seeing a Republican president for a very long time to come, and the older Republicans I know don’t think they will see one again in their lifetime.

That’s how it shook out. The GOP refused to take responsibility for such things as health care and we paid a heavy price. In fact, a certain elderly couple I know are convinced the America we knew will not be coming back and they said they are glad they are so old that they won’t have to see its final days.

Atlas will have shrugged.

Being seen as “anti-women’s choice” will cost the Conservatives similarly.

First it is not anti-choice, it is pro-abortion. I favor choice, the choice of life. When someone says they are pro-choice, they are not, they are in favor(push for) of abortion. The choice is to give that baby life. It amazes me to no end that there are Republicans who really believe that if we choose life over the death of a baby, we will lose votes. If the only way we can win is to choose death, then I do not care if we lose.

why don’t you figure out some way to come across as “pro legal immigration” and “pro-life” and Conservative at the same time?

Because that's exactly what we are as Conservatives -- pro-legal immigration and pro-life. If you're so under the sway of the MSM or too dense to recognize the fact, there's little we can say or do to change your misconceptions.

Why your "scare quotes" by the way?

We can already say that Donna unless whites cowboy up....which I sure don’t see happening

Studying the last election’s results along racial and ethnic demographics tells one that whites will have to vote in lockstep like never before as conservatives to beat what is a fairly monolithic minority vote here now.

57% of whites voted McSarah

79% latinos

96% blacks

68-72% Asians ....Orientals, Indians etc

this election will one day be studied as the watershed for when the white Christian voted lost it’s power to win elections by itself

hope everyone is happy

Please understand that I'm not supporting McCain. Hardly. But the party isn't going to respond to a group which isn't a source of either money or votes. Our objective should not be to make the party court us. Instead, it should be to actively regain control of the party. We can best do this by uniting behind and actively supporting conservatives at the state and local level. Winning primaries with them. And, then, general elections. It will be a tedious process. But it will produce better results more quickly than would a third party.

I respect President Bush, and I have never known him to lie which is a rare quality in a politician.

However, liberals chewed him up and spit him out by taking advantage of his call for compassion. Yet here we are not even the 'one' sworn in and already he is calling for US to sacrifice.... Compassion is discipline not hand outs especially to able bodied citizens or to illegals funding their health care and public education.

These days I can't tell a difference in the two parties, and there are so few conservatives left on the political horizon I am not sure they will even be heard. There was a time when conservatives were for law and order, individual responsibility and not looking to some government agency to use to bash a neighbor.

ABSOLUTLEY NO,,, It wouldnt make me happy. Let me ask you, if we say everyone who robbed banks before the same date was forgiven, but then we would aggressively go after all the new robbers? What have the early ones done to deserve citizenship? Does a burglar in your home get to stay if he signs a rental agreement??

And every amnesty bill promises amnesty, then enforcement,,then never delivers on the enforcement, PERIOD.

Also,, what of the many many good Europeans who follow our immigration laws and apply and wait, endure lotteries,,etc,,, while millions of chinese and mexicans get US Visas as the reward for their lawlessness?
Send them all home to fix their own 3rd world country.
