“We all hope that Gavin Newsom wins the nomination so the Republicans get a chance,” GOP analyst Allan Hoffenblum noted.

(sound of barf hitting keyboard...)
Oh really? I thought it was a sign of a more leftist GOP leadership that brought us a crushing burden of debt!
Thus goes the line from ‘Operation Petticoat’— “In confusion there is profit”.
If the Republicans in CA nominate a pro abortion candidate, then we might as well vote for a Democrat.
One of the core principles of conservatism is right to life.
Any politician willing to “compromise” on abortion is willing to compromise on anything.
It doesn’t much matter who is CA guv, given that we have this permanent dem state house majority. We threw out Grey Davis, but kept the rest of the problem in Sacramento.
The thundering herd of RINOS in the Republican Party has scared me off of them. I have no use for these lilly livered varmints.
No doubt. The problem with the RINOS is they want to “fix” the government, not reduce the government. They are pro big government they just want to be in charge...SCREW THEM.
It is a sign of something, but "moderation" ain't it. The Late Great State of Colleyfornya is just about beyond redemption.
Remember when Arnold took the governor's seat, how many Freepers were talking about how great that was. While they hoped it was because he was a strong conservative, it was really because he was a celebrity, and everyone hoped that a conservative celebrity would be able to promote conservatism.
I withheld judgment.
We need to stand behind representatives who have supported conservatism, who have been tried under fire, and who have stood by the basic principles of conservatism.
Getting behind someone because they are a minority (and will bring in the minority vote, foolish assumption) or because they are a celebrity (and will make conservatism cool, foolish assumption) is a wasted and self-defeating effort.
We need intelligent conservatives who have stood behind their principles and who can also promote conservatism.
Many social issues (abortion, gay rights, minority representation) were cooked up by extreme leftists in order to split this country apart. The principles of our Founding Fathers are for the best of all, and in THAT, there is unity and strength. To jump on their bandwagon is to accept their premises (America is corrupt and oppressive and needs to be set straight by central management) and thus defeat our own argument.
Pray Newsome gets the nomination. This guy was caught on camera making the most obnoxious remarks. Many attribute that video for the passage of Prop 8.
This is the depth of the CaGoP farm club? Oh please.
I also tend to think Senator McCain didn’t do as well in CA as he should of, because of Governor Schwarzenegger.
If I remember correctly, Republican voter turnout in Orange County was way down. I suspect it had a lot to do with a lot of people being very disappointed with Governor Schwarzenegger and they decided they’d learned their lesson.
I, for one, can’t really blame them.
The current crop of “Republicans” have not done anything to deserve being in control of government.
There is HOPE for CHANGE in California:with eBay in charge ,all state offices could be sold to the highest bidder, those wanting state services could use “Buy It Now”,..the profitbilities are endless!
Orange County still went for McCain though, while San Diego and Riverside didn’t.
McClintock was the last, best hope for conservatism in California. His inability to be elected to statewide office shows how far to the left this state has swung.
Frankly, I no longer see reason for any optimism in California.
Social moderate = supports abortion on demand in all circumstances
Far right-wing social conservative = Anything less than supporting abortion on demand in all circumstances. Being against taxpayer funded embroyic stem research will also make you a "hard right" candidate.
Social liberal = no such thing

Villaraigosa would be a better pick. An emptier suit you won't find.
As an executive I suspect she’s emminently capable. Perhaps on issues that are outside the realm of running an organization, she might - gasp - defer to the will of the people she serves.
