CBS News: Bristol Palin the Face of 'Growing Crisis' Teenage Pregnancy
Newsbusters ^ | January 8, 2009 - 16:51 ET | Kyle Drennen

Posted on 01/09/2009 8:10:32 AM PST by lewisglad

In the final half hour of Thursday’s CBS Early Show, correspondent Bianca Solorzano reported on an increase in the teen pregnancy rate, using Bristol Palin as an example: "Teen pregnancy was on the RNC platform this year, literally, as Sarah Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, was about to give birth. Jamie Lynne Spears made headlines at 16, not for her acting, but the grown-up, real-life role of becoming a teen mom. These famous faces front a growing problem." A graphic appeared on screen declaring: "Teen Pregnancy: The Growing Crisis."

Later, Solorzano explained: "After more than a decade of progress, experts fear we've been lulled into a false sense of security. And have stopped pouring resources into prevention." A clip of the movie ‘Juno’ was then played, after which Solorzano exclaimed: "And unlike the comedy 'Juno,' there's nothing funny about the nation's growing number of teenage mothers."

Here is the full transcript of the segment:

8:31AM SEGMENT:

RUSS MITCHELL: We're going to begin this half hour with a story about teen pregnancies on the rise. It is a reversal of recent trends. CBS News correspondent Bianca Solorzano has more.

[GRAPHIC ON SCREEN: 'Teen Pregnancy: The Growing Crisis']

BIANCA SOLORZANO: Teen pregnancy was on the RNC platform this year, literally, as Sarah Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, was about to give birth. Jamie Lynne Spears made headlines at 16, not for her acting, but the grown-up, real-life role of becoming a teen mom. These famous faces front a growing problem. A new report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows for the first time in almost 15 years, the number of teen birth rates is on the rise.

BILL ALBERT [NATIONAL TEEN PREGNANCY CAMPAIGN]: We've got a problem nationally, that we've got a problem in nearly every state, and that we have a problem among all racial and ethnic groups.

SOLORZANO: Teen births are up significantly in 26 states. Mississippi now leads the nation with the highest teen pregnancy rate. 68 births for every 1,000 teenage girls. New Mexico and Texas aren't far behind. In comparison, New Hampshire has the nation's lowest rate. 19 births for every 1,000 female teens. After more than a decade of progress, experts fear we've been lulled into a false sense of security. And have stopped pouring resources into prevention.

[CLIP OF MOVIE 'JUNO']

JENNIFER GARNER: Your parents are probably wondering where you are.

ELLEN PAGE: Nah, I mean, I'm already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into?

[END OF CLIP]

SOLORZANO: And unlike the comedy 'Juno,' there's nothing funny about the nation's growing number of teenage mothers. Bianca Solorzano, CBS News, New York.

If Bristol Palin were the daughter of, say, Barbara Boxer, we would be deluged with stories about her "courage" and her "strength".

That the liberal media choose to politicize a subject like teenage pregnancy is a stunning admission of moral vacuity.

I really, really wish that I could kick the perpetrators in the teeth.

I’m so glad you chose to complain to Newsbusters for zinging Bristol Palin and not Jamie Lynn Spears when they reported this story...after all, CBS News reported them together.

are stunning on a forum like FR. It is the height of hypocrisy.

Sadly, "FR" and "hypocrisy" are synonymous for many these days. Like you, I have been here for more than 10 years and it sickens me to see how bad it has gotten.

Fortunately, there are still those who think conservatism can stand on its own merits, without playing games.

Surely a Freeper has posted the date and time of the CBS program featuring Obama’s unwed mother’s pregnancy somewhere in this thread.

I'm not talking about Newsbusters or CBS News. I'm talking about people like you and lady lawyer in whose addled brains it seems like a good use of time to post on FR bashing Sarah Palin's daughter when we're 10 days away from Obamanation.

Pardon my language, but your priorities are severely f'ed up.

We’re just not willing to abandon all standards because it serves the purpose of some politician, conservative or otherwise.

When there are those inside the gates exposing us to hostile fire with their hypocrisy, with all due respect, that is as much a priority as the barbarians who are out there regardless.

I see plenty of young soldiers in their mid-twenties who are married to eighteen or nineteen year old girls. It tends to be cultural and they tend to be from the South, and they seem to do just fine. Just my experience.

What standard is that exactly? Blaming a politician for what you perceive to be the crimes of her adult daughter? She is 18, not 12. I guess you would approve if she threw Bristol to the curb for not marrying the father on your time table.

No wonder Obama won. The flawless candidate just wasn't on the ballot. We should probably never consider any parent for office because perfect children don't exist, even in conservative households.

Straw man? The point being made was, it is wrong from them to delay marriage- they should have married quickly to legitimize Tripp’s birth, and that is somehow Sarah’s fault.

I don’t see where the Straw Man enters in when I say that Sarah can’t force anyone to marry. I don’t hold her responsible for Bristol’s decisions.

I have no hidden agenda, here.

That’s good news.

I have an ancestor who married at 15 and seemed to have done quite well, too. More than a dozen children in as many years, and the family was quite well loved by others in the area, and she was quite happy.

But I don’t know that I could find any 15 year olds like that today.

You’re the one bringing the criticism of Sarah Palin, or implying she should do something. The actual point being made was that the same people who would criticize unwed teen mothers in Hollywood are fine with Bristol Palin. (This isn’t just an FR thing.) Gov. Palin comes into this only as the reason for the hypocrisy.

Now that is the most ironically funny post I have seen in a long time here on FR...

Its interesting that Mormom Utah has the lowest teen pregnancy rate in America. While Evangelical MS has the highest teen birth rate. Do Mormon bashers have a leg on stand on?

You misunderstand me. I am saying the Governor Palin is NOT responsible. She is not in a position to decide whether her daughter marries or not.
