Ann Coulter Makes Stab At Single Motherhood In Controversial New Book

Uber conservative political commentator and author, Ann Coulter, is drumming up controversy among the masses with her new book Guilty: Liberal Victims and Their Assault on America.

The gist of her book? Liberals "playing victim" when she believes them to be the actual "victimizers."

With anything Coulter has her hand in, this latest installment is sure to get tempers flaring, especially among single mothers.

Monday night Coulter appeared on Fox News Channel's Hannity & Colmes.

Tuesday morning Coulter made a controversial appearance on NBC's Today Show (after her originally scheduled appearance was cancelled.)

In both appearances, Coulter's lastest stabs at single motherhood were discussed.

Alan Colmes quoted Coulter's book, "Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts."

And finally, "We have a term for youngsters involved, the 'children of divorce,' or as I call them, 'future strippers.'"

Coulter reverted her argument about single motherhood back to what she believes to be our country's recent "hatred" of the institution of marriage and made mention of Hollywood's promotion of single motherhood.

No - it was Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Henry Hyde is a Republican Representative from Illonios.

You are so smart, that you just now happened to find FR. Why do you trolls give yourselves away like that? Ann is nothing but conservative, so if she gets your panties in a bunch, go back to DU

I remember not too long ago, here in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, that minority women were pumping out babies at a ridiculous rate, all in an effort to increase their government check.

While I personally see a change in that behavior, it’s not that long ago. And those children are being raised by mothers with that type of thinking.

Ann may be abrasive in the manner in which she speaks the truth, but it is still the truth.

JMO.

I'm not sure what one has to do with the other.

Why do you trolls give yourselves away like that?

I don't think that word (troll) means what you think it means. It doesn't mean "a person who disagrees with freeplancer."

Ann is nothing but conservative

I never claimed otherwise.

so if she gets your panties in a bunch, go back to DU

I know you might have a hard time understanding this, but just because someone is a conservative, that does not make them immune to criticism. Ann Coulter is certainly a conservative, but she is a poor spokesperson for conservative ideas and she does not belong in the first rank of conservative scholars and thinkers. Or do you think she is on the same level as, say, Barry Goldwater or William F. Buckley?

Wonder what she thinks of Sarah Palin’s daughter? Is that child predestined to be a criminal because it was conceived out of wedlock?

Maybe. But does she change anyone's mind? I doubt it. As someone said upthread, she's just preaching to the choir.

She was asked this, though not quite exactly as you put it, by Kathy Lee Gifford and some other yenta the other day. Ann replied that her intention was not to persuade anyone, especially liberals, but to get what you refer to as the "choir" up off their collective a$$es and start fighting back. (I paraphrase but that is the gist of her remarks)

Barry Goldwater, William F. Buckley, Benajmin Disraeli, to name a few.

I actually don't disagree with all that much she has to say (though I think when she wrote a book evolution, she was out of her depth- science is not her strong point). My complaint with her is that the manner in which she delivers her message undermines its impact.

Well, then it must be you because she sounds clear and concise to me and thousands of others.

it's not me... and i'm not the only one who thinks this... i like her, but i'm not going to pretend that she's quick to formulate and then speak a clear thought on the fly... she has her strengths... clear, concise speaking while being bombasted by liberals is not one of them... even you brought up the notion that she was clear when someone allowed her time to say what she wanted to say... you even suggested that i listen to her at one of those moments... i'm sure she can pull that off... i'm just saying that other conservatives, while being bombasted by liberals, are able to speak clearly and concisely... as great as she is, not so Miss Ann...

So then you agree with almost all of her opinions yet you just don't like the way she presents them?

Science may not be her forte but she was absolutely correct in what she wrote about the fallacious canard dubbed "human evolution".

I doubt very much she is saying single mothers are bad.

What I suspect she is saying is that single motherhood is a very undesirable thing and shouldn't be encouraged, and the fools in the media, academia and Hollywood have encouraged it to every thinking person's regret.

Well, this is an interesting thread. All right, I got a couple of (pro-Ann) points to make:

1) For those of you who say it's offensive and a hyperbole that she said single mothers is a farm for breeding future criminals (I know I'm not quoting exactly), in her book she states : "By 1996, 70 percent of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy-two percent of juvenile murders and 60 percent of rapists come from single-mother homes. (37)" With numbers that high, I don't think Coulter is exxagerating or making hyperboles.

2)As someone whose parents are divorced (and is not a stripper), I didn't find her comment at all offensive.

3)Some of you are saying that (and I'm paraphrasing here),since she is pro-life, Ann shouldn't be so hard on single mothers because the other option is abortion. Um, from the first full paragraph on p. 43 to the end of 44, she brings up adoption--how there are still many people who want to adopt and how adopted kids are no worse off than non-adopted kids.

4)For those of you who ask if she's presenting solutions or whether she's just stating the problem, I got the impression that her solutions are: for the women that gets pregnant out of wedlock, to either have a shotgun wedding or give up the baby for adoption. And for society at large: teach that abstinence until marriage is the best thing, don't pass laws that makes single motherhood easier and acceptable, and for society to not look at single mothers as though they are heroes and saints. "Parents who had shotgun marriages, or who relinquished illegitimate children to adoptive parents, or who stuck it out through tough times for the sake of their children--these are the ones who should be venerated, not somebody's 'baby mamma'"(71). Or you could all just read the book and see the points Ann makes for yourself.

5)I honestly don't think she's turning anyone away with her style. It's not like there are people going "Well, I believe in individual freedom and responsibility. I believe in lower taxes. I belief the United States should fight and defend itself against our enemies. I am pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, believe global warming is a hoax. Nevertheless, I am going to vote for the liberal democrat because Ann Coulter is mean." As this thread (and many others) show, it's very possible to be a conservative and not like Ann Coulter. Also, I know at least one person that she has brought over from the liberal side to the conservative side (me). Because when I was a liberal, I didn't needed niceness, a "can we get along attitude", or a long boring scholarly argument; I needed someone to wack me over the head, and Ann did just that. And I doubt I'm the only one.

It’s not just “sperm and run”. Lots of women don’t tell Daddy or purposely exclude him, or use him only for his check book. I feel like the woman is in control of her fertility. She has many more options for prevention and can “just say no”.

The condom that never fails is the one held tightly between the knees!
