Eight Responses to the Pro-Choice Mindset

I once said that I'd die to keep abortion legal and easily accessible, and I meant it. I was vehemently pro-choice, as were most of the women in my social circles. We believed abortion was a critical right for women and could not imagine how anyone could be pro-life. We were products of a culture in which human sexuality had been severed from its inherent connection to the creation of human life. Our generation had been taught in our public school sex-ed classes not that sex creates babies, but that unprotected sex creates babies. We were assured that the creation of new human life was tangential to sexual activity, something that was not only optional but completely controllable. In fact, babies were considered downright antithetical to sex.

In my life as a young adult I knew many women who had abortions, and in every case their attitudes regarding their pregnancies were ultimately the same: "I didn't sign up for this." Society had assured them that sex did not have to have life-altering consequences, and their unplanned pregnancies came as unwelcome surprises. In this panicked frame of mind they -- and those of us who supported them -- were susceptible to the pro-abortion message that their babies were nothing more than "tissue," that abortion was merely "pregnancy termination" and not the taking of a human life.

Dehumanizing words like "fetus"

I have been lucky enough to be given the chance to teach college intro biology. I don't think there are many "pro-choice" students in my class at the end of the semester. However, I do use the term "fetus", or rather "human fetus". Nothing wrong with that, I just make sure they understand that the word only describes a stage in the development of a human being, just like infant, child... Hey, we all are former fetuses!

Women should be able to choose

I always ask, to choose WHAT? Dismembering another human being, burning him/her to death... Who should be able to choose those?

Actually, this teaching is accurate. Of course, protection regularly fails, making the sex act unpredictably unprotected.

"unprotected sex creates babies."

I think the point she is trying to make is, that from this statement comes the mentality that babies are somehow bad or a burden.

All the ‘absinence PLUS’ packages fail to mention—

—that the PLUS is an instant-gratification sabotage to the fake abstinence message. The PLUS is not fleeing temptation to the situation that later can lead to having to ask much tougher questions...

...about one’s participation in the procreative act and/or about HIV...

...and about one’s permitting or causing another human thus created to die, playing God with one’s own offspring.

I appreciate the signs on the trailers of
Covenant Transport, which read:
It is a Child, not a Choice.

I think what really struck home in this article was how young women (and young men) who become pregnant have a “I didn’t sign up for this” attitude.

Too many go into a “hey, I was just having fun, this ain’t fair, I shouldn’t have to face this burden” mode and the idea that they can somehow just “erase” this pregnancy and “clear the slate” doesn’t equate to actually taking a human life.

And with a president who has declared that getting pregnant is a “mistake” and is being “punished with a baby” it will be harder to fight this mentality (just looked what happened to the attitudes about sex with WJC in office) — but fight we must!

As Father Frank Pavone says, when Americans see abortion, they will reject it.

Part of the trouble is that no one sees the victims of abortion. The dead babies are thrown away and the mothers of them are usually so ashamed they will not speak of the pain that they are suffering due to their guilt and grief.

That is changing and so are the minds of the American people. We must continue to show our young people the reality of abortion. I have taken my children to the priestsforlife.org website where they have seen the horrific pictures. I have also taken them to the silentnomore.org site that tells the stories of the traumatized mothers.

And lastly, I have shared with them my own abortion story. They know that they should have had a sibling but my convenience was more important. It was one of the hardest and most shameful things I have had to admit to my own kids, but necessary so that they can hear and see the truth, not the propaganda of the abortion industry.

Me too. When they say, “the right to choose” I say, the right to choose WHAT?

They make it sound like it’s a choice between getting diet pop or sugary pop, that’s a choice.

The grave and seriously depraved “choice” they talk about so easily, is the “choice” to kill the most innocent of human life, lying in the mother’s womb, knitted there by God Almighty, Who knows that child’s soul.

The pro-abortion left are the same as murderers to me, whether they just vote for abortion candidates or have killed a child themselves. Any support of abortion is wrong in the strongest sense of what the word wrong can mean.

I admire your character.

Regarding your children's' exposure to those horrific pictures. I remember around 1973 at the time of Roe-v-Wade, after Mass the Prolife folks were in back of the church and had that famous picture of the aborted children in the plastic bag, I was around ten years old then, I'll never forget seeing that picture, and since then NO ONE can convince me that abortion is not wrong.

One of the tactics of the pro-legal-abortion folks is to elevate "choice" as a concept to the status of a value. It is not; it is the mechanism, rather, by which an individual declares for or against a given value.

By asking this rhetorical question, you are unveiling the true value at stake - that of undermining a more fundamental human right with a less fundamental one.
