A 2010 showdown between Rep. Peter King and Hillary Clinton's Senate successor took another step toward reality yesterday as the Long Island Congressman had a favorable meeting with GOP leaders.
Caroline Kennedy Through the Years
View Gallery Have a look at Caroline Kennedy through the years as she launches her campaign for Hillary Clinton's New York Senate seat. The 63-year-old King (R-Seaford) had a sitdown with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn and received his blessing for a potential 2010 run, Politico reported today.
"Senator Cornyn believes Peter King would be a very formidable candidate. He believes the seat could be in play, and is prepared to commit the resources to win the seat, a senior Republican aide familiar with the meeting told Politico.
The battle-tested King has made no secret of his interest in Clinton's seat, a desire that may make it tougher for Gov. David Paterson to nominate a political neophyte such as Caroline Kennedy to the seat.
King, who is expected to announce his intention shortly after the Senate seat is filled, has already taken shots at Kennedy, telling Politico last month that theres nothing in her background that indicates shes ready to be a fighter in the trenches for New Yorkers.
The support of Cornyn is major plus for King because New York state voters have not be kind to the GOP lately and any viable campaign in a statewide election would cost upward of $30 million, Politico reported.
Its clear King is interested in pursuing it, a GOP aide told Politico. It was a very good meeting, Cornyn thinks very highly of him."

Ugh. Time to vote, “None of the Above.”
I think that Peter King has a regular folks kind of appeal which would contrast well against Princess Caroline. King isn’t the ideal candidate, but he appears to be the best we can get in New York.
Too funny - I hope the King dethrones the Princess! I really hope she doesn’t get the seat...
I think I misread that...I took it as Kennedy had the meeting with GOP leaders. Oops. Guess I should stick to my own threads :)
King is strong on WOT but lost me with his vote on the socialist bail-out.
Given that this is New York, and we’re not about to elect another James Buckley, I think King is certainly the best the Republicans can hope for. I’m hoping Patterson does appoint Kennedy, since she’d be a much weaker candidate in two years than Cuomo.
It will have to happen in the safe Republican states first. New York is not one of those.

Wow. Articulation at the very finest.
I have thought for some time that “None of the Above” should be on the ballot as an option.
I think one state does have this.
I will never forget that Richard Pryor movie, Brewster’s Millions” where he ran for Mayor of New York and told everyone to vote that way.
If we as voters had had that option in 2008 for President I would have voted that way and I wonder just how many others would have voted that way also.
Man where is James Buckley when you need him!!!!!!!!!!!!
What song had that as a constant refrain in the lyrics??
As I think about right now writing it was a Bill Withers song.
The only type of Republican who can win in NY is a RINO. Period.
There are times King bothers the hell out of me, but on national security, few have been stronger or more vocal. And, he is SO New York. He can even drag out all the old pix of him with Slick WIllie to show the NY Dem voters he’s not one to fear.
Assuming a Kennedy appointment (which I don’t, necessarily) that will be one fun election to watch.
Thanks, Happy New Year!
Either Peter King or Rudy Giuliani are the strongest GOP possibilities for this Senate seat, and Rudy is interested in running for N.Y. Governor. The GOP should have some strong candidates in N.Y.
I am not optimistic that the GOP can defeat Princess Caroline. No matter who the candidate may be.
Probably never, but it doesn't matter in this case. King will not be considered for the seat -- hellooooo? He's a Republican. This article is so full of it that Al Gore will probably suggest levying a methane tax.
I heard Rudy is trying to get a radio talk show gig. If he gets the radio job, he may forgo the Governor contest.
