The chairman of the Senate Rules Committee has parted with many of her Democratic colleagues and says that the Senate should seat former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said Tuesday that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, however tainted by corruption charges, has the right to appoint someone to President-elect Barack Obama's former seat. The Rules Committee decides whether Burris is qualified to serve.

I doubt that the secretary of state’s approval is required. Otherwise a mere SOS could block a governor’s appointments. It may be customary, but the Gov is still Gov, and he did make the appointment, and he could certify that appointment himself if he so chose.
She’s pissed.
As a brand new Senator that's exactly where he will sit.
Sloppy reporting, done for dramatic effect, most likely. Burris filed that motion on Dec 31, 2008. Case No. 107816 - Burris, Perlman and Ruff v. Jesse White. His lawyers did file a number of documents, likely noting that the predicted problems at the Senate did in fact materialize today. I haven't read today's filings yet, though.
She’s definitely staking her ground for something.
Speaking of Jesse White, Sec. of State for IL, I wonder if he certified the presidential eligibility of the messiah for the November election in his state.
“Speaking of Jesse White, Sec. of State for IL, I wonder if he certified the presidential eligibility of the messiah for the November election in his state.”
No kidding. I’ve thought that same thing. Every time I hear that someone had to be certified, and yet Obama hasn’t been, I want to throw a rock at the t.v.
Sounds like Feinstein wants to be majority leader.
The question then becomes on what grounds is White refusing to sign? It could be more a case of Jesse violating the law than Blagojevich.
"Sounds like Feinstein wants to be majority leader."
Sounds like Dingy Harry could have some problems with the Blago wiretaps.
Hmmmm.....

“Gaines said Blagojevich would face a great deal of pressure to appoint another black individual if the situation eventually presents itself.
Secretary of State Jesse White and Sen. Emil Jones, D-Chicago, are two possible contenders.”
Oh, no, no, no...you need to understand DiFi doesn't flip-flop. (Dems never flip-flop, dontcha know.) She "reevaluates" her position depending on the way the wind is blowing. See, it's like this. She didn't want Blago to appoint a senator, but now that he has, DiFi sees an opportunity to burnish her carefully crafted reputation for independence and moderation. Plus, in California, which has a powerful black constituency, she wants to be seen as supporting the only African-American senator-designee. Just in case she decides to run for governor in a couple of years, you see.
After living here over 30 years, I've had long practice figuring out the real reasons why our scummy California politicans do things.
If he does then it's never too early to start campaigning to replace him.
There's been rumors about this for a long time in the state. She's also not one to be trifled with, as Obama just found out. After all, she launched her national political career when she took over at city hall the day Harvey Milk was assassinated. The woman is tough as nails, and she's carefully burnished a (phony) rep as a "moderate" with an independent streak.
I think they don’t want to seat him because he doesn’t appear to be corrupt enough; not a member of the O-boy’s gangsters.
he’s not corrupt enough, as you said, and my goodness, he might even show up for work every day unlike the guy he is supposed to replace, our esteemed President - Elect. i have to admit that i am drawn to a guy who actually earns his paycheck.
Dianne Feinstein has long been one of the more unpredictable liberals in the Senate. She’s becoming more so.
This is PR payback for the Panetta appointment and her shut-out on the issue. She’s showing 0 and the gang she’s got game. IMHO
Is that his “I love me” tomb he built for hisself ?
