The chairman of the Senate Rules Committee has parted with many of her Democratic colleagues and says that the Senate should seat former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said Tuesday that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, however tainted by corruption charges, has the right to appoint someone to President-elect Barack Obama's former seat. The Rules Committee decides whether Burris is qualified to serve.

Apparently she got the note from her lawyers......not to mention the spectacle of democrats turning a well dressed, older black man away from the senate doors.

BAH ...
this has been cheap theater from the start (blago’s bust)

the dems would NEVER willingly allow the Illinois voters to fill that last spot

their hope is the knuckleheads that gave us durbin blago and jughead will forget about the corruption that taints the entire state

This is an outrage, as the Democratic led Senate has no standing to do this.

When is Burris taking this to court?

Directly opposing the One’s insistence that Burris not be seated.

First they said they weren’t going to seat anyone Blagojevich would appoint. Now they say, seat Burris because he’s black. That’s a slim argument for changing their position now. It’s ridiculous.

Feinstein also said she received an apology from Obama for not being told about the Panetta nomination prior to reading about it in the papers.

My guess is that Feinstein knows what a pushover Obama is, and I’m guessing that most of his former colleagues in the Senate know this as well.

Hi Star, Happy New Year. Speaking as a Californian, I can attest to the fact that DiFi has always had a streak of independence to her. She’s considered a possible candidate for governor herself, so I’m sure she’s looking to preserve gubernatorial graft prerogatives. ;-)

LEGALLY speaking is there any grounds not to seat Burris?

If the Senate is adopting Jim Crow, then they should admit him but make him sit in the back of the chamber...

Looks like Feinswine has flip-flopped, given that she, along with every other Dem, signed this letter to Blago on Dec. 11th:

“Under NO circumstance make an appointment to fill the vacant Illinois Senate seat. In light of your arrest yesterday on alleged federal corruption charges related to that Senate seat, ANY appointment by you would raise serious questions.”

i’m with Di Fi on this one. they haven’t impeached Blago, not sure Fitzgerald’s got the goods on him since he needed a 90 day extension, and Burris doesn’t seem to be on the take as far as we know. i felt very uncomfortable seeing him humiliated today. very uncomfortable. he should be seated. he is not Blago and Blago’s sins should not be visited on him.

Does seem that Di Fi is raising her visibility. I'm trying to decide if she want to run for CA Governor or try for Senate Majority Leader. She wants something big, just not sure what yet.

Beyond the stuff in the constitution, appointments need the signature of the Governor & Secretary of the State- the second of which Burris doesn’t have. So they do have the power. How it will make the Dims look, however, is the stuff that dreams are made of.
