Reinstating the draft is how the left will insure the US military never goes to war again for any reason.

A draft would aid the stimulus by creating new jobs??? That doesn’t make sense. The nature of a draft would mean the people looking for work wouldn’t necessarily be the ones that find it, and the people who are employed may have to leave their job to enter the service. If the people looking were qualified to fill the spots of the folks who were drafted, that’s one thing, but I don’t think that will be the case.

this article is misleading in a couple of ways....
when push came to shove, we've always had conscripts.

Media commentary today and in recent days indicates that there is the possibility that the Obama White House will reinstitute the draft as part of its “stimulus plan...."

Sometimes these stories get by me. The posted story didn't include any links, so I did a quick google search. So far, the only big-name person I could find is Rush Limbaugh. Anybody hear anyone else discussing this? Here's Rush:

Where could you do this in a matter of months? I said you could reinstitute the draft. And why not institute the draft if you're Obama, who is a Democrat. Democrats believe that people who live in the South and in poor economic circumstances have no way out of those circumstances other than join the military. Don't you remember? People who join the military are not patriots; they're stupid, they're uneducated, they're economically depressed, they live in these little hick town shacks like Obama's brother, and they have no chance to get out other than join the military....

He won’t want to draft them into the military, because it is Republican dominated, but to have a “public service” draft, putting them anywhere but the military.

I bet he goes for mandatory “public service” for all children, from kindergarten through college. Something like having them pick up trash for 15 minutes, followed by an hour long harangue by a political officer.

Agree w/you. However, we should also note that the dropoff in recruitment has happened after the Sept. 15 stock market crash — when it became apparent that Obama was going to win the presidency. What man or woman who really wants to serve would want to serve under a President Obama as their Commander-in-Chief.

Was joking with a friend of mine — another former military person — about whether Obama actually knew how to salute yet. He suggests the MSM will use computer generated imagery to simulate the O salute.

Dear Leader Obama promised a 'conscripted service'; we will get it. Maybe a 'choice'. . .a 'Civilian Militia duty' or the Military. Would bet they make the Civilian Militia' more attractive. . .but 'whatever'; our young will be 'beholding' and be held captive by Obama and the Dem Marxists. We had a 'conscripted Army' but we did not have 'welfare'- no 'Nanny Government'. We had 'family'; and values; and genuine patriotism and altruism. We were a Country that valued Freedom and unity - diversity was not celebrated; and no MO for it's accompanying divisevness. It was a different time; different expectations. . .

We still have those who are patriotic; despite the Lib/Left efforts to kill it. . .but as we take a 'huge Left turn' here; in time. . .it will not be patriotism that brings the majority of citizens to serve their Country.

I think you actually have it backwards. First you force the military to admit gays. Once morale and pride have been utterly destroyed, retention falls through the floor.

Now you HAVE to draft to fill the ranks.

However, now the members are non-volunteer, unwilling, unmotivated and devoid of pride for the uniform they wear.

No. Making the draft again will kill the military. I served during the draft era in the 1970s. You get people who have absolutely NO, NONE, ZERO want to be in the military. These people do nothing. Wimp out. Screw off. Sleep on duty. Basically refuse to get with the program. These people did more to screw up the daily running of a unit than anything. They get into trouble all the time. They did not care. They got kicked out. They did as they wanted to get kicked out. This will destroy the military quickly once you have 3 to 6 of every troop in a unit not wanting to be in the military.

Exactly. Zero knows that he can kiss it all goodbye with the libs if he does something this stupid. He doesn’t mind tweaking with his supporters a bit, such as keeping Gates as Secretary of Defense, or having Rick Warren deliver a prayer even though it ticks off homosexuals, but he’s not going to do something that fundamentally stupid.

Not so sure it would be viewed as fundamentally stupid. First of all, the Libs really don’t care about the strength of our military so they don’t care if a draft is not what the military wants in order to remain strong. Second, funny thing about Libs, their attitude changes when it s “their” military. Some leaders of Black Dem Caucus have been in favor of draft to equalize race and socioecon class demographics of military. On campaign trail at the Times Mag—sponsored forum on service, O. said more will serve and he was talking about military service. O. also said more troops to Afghanistan.
