Like a Virgin: The Press' Take [Mistake] On Teenage Sex
Wall Street Journal ^ | JANUARY 6, 2009 | WILLIAM MCGURN

Posted on 01/06/2009 2:28:25 PM PST by Mrs. Don-o

"Premarital Abstinence Pledges Ineffective, Study Finds," heralds the Washington Post. "Virginity Pledges Fail to Trump Teen Lust in Look at Older Data," reports Bloomberg. And on it goes.

In other words, teens will be teens, and moms or dads who believe that concepts such as restraint or morality have any application today are living in a dream world. Typical was the lead for the CBS News story: "Teenagers who take virginity pledges are no less sexually active than other teens, according to a new study."

Here's the rub: It just isn't true.

In fact, the only way the study's author, Janet Elise Rosenbaum of Johns Hopkins University, could reach such results was by comparing teens who take a virginity pledge with a very small subset of other teens...

Bravo to McGurn for writing this and to the WSJ for printing it.

I am abashed to admit that when I read the initial publicity ("Virginity Pledge Makes No Difference"), I shook my head and thought, "There must be somethhibg missing to this story, but I don't know what it is."

It was right out there in front of me and I didn't see it. The study didn't compare abstinence-pledge teens to the teen population at large: it compared religious teenagers from conservative Christian families who didn't formally take a pledge to religious teenagers from conservative Christian families who did.

All they "proved" is that if you are a religious teen from a conservative Christian family, pledge or not, you're much less likely than most teenagers to engage in sex too young, too often, and with too many partners.

Or in other words, the "pledge" itself is meaningfuul only in the context of a larger, broader, deeper effort to cultivate traits of morality, decency, and sexual wisdom in our kids.

Which we already knew.

I confess, sometimes I simply loathe the mendacious, manipulative mainstream media.

Well, well, well. How did I know that the conclusions of this story would turn out to be lies and manipulations?

You'd best believe the MSM folks at the WarshPost and Bloomberg didn't hold their virginity dear, and they still don't.

Did you know what the AIDS rate is in DC? It's simply incredible.

Smart guys don't date girls who live or work in DC.

Is it evenly distributed, or more common amongst the "DuPont Circle" crowd?

See? I am not as naive as you think. Kids brought up this way aren’t all promiscuous.

Well, well, well. Probably many of you remember one or two fairly recent articles about this. I was really surprised and found it hard to believe this study. No difference? ??

Well, here's the reason why. If they had compared teenagers who pledged chastity to all teenagers, or even more so - teenagers from non-conservative non-religious households - imagine those results!

More evidence, as if we need any, that the MSM are just the new Pravda. They are propaganda and an arm of the Dem party in particular and leftist/atheist/homosexual agenda pushers in general.

Thanks, and thanks for the ping.

The shameless Mediascum and the so-called academics who are driving this b.s. just had to twist everything to produce the story they wanted. What a disgrace to Johns Hopkins University, to everyone who endorsed this crock, and to the MSM types who flogged it without any critical analysis.

I’ll bet it (the AIDs rate in DC) is no higher than in any of the other black African countries.

You know what else we knew when we were kids? We knew that the girls father would kill us if we messed with his daughter. Parents don’t care enough today. They just give the girls pills and don’t hold them responsible. If people think we didn’t have raging hormones in the 50’s, they are nuts. Better upbringing, better morales, better respect and fear kept us fairly straight.

It's not just the black females. The rate is higher among the white females who live in DC, and higher than elsewhere in equivalent populations among the white females who commute to work there.

It's just one of those places.

I think they compare it to Haiti.

I caught a couple of these earlier today. Astoundingly disingenuous, even for the MSM. Lots of people won’t read past the headline/opening sentence, because it’s what they want to see anyway.

As I’ve said before, it’s not about “teen sex” at all, except to the extent that a lot of adults want to have sex with teenagers. It’s about the fact that even suggesting that sex outside marriage is morally wrong or socially harmful, irrespective of the age of the participants, cannot be allowed.

My father made it real clear that if caught me doing something i wasn't supposed to, he would turn me over tot he young lady's father to deal with and he would punish whatever was left over
