*SEVERE SPACE WEATHER:*

SEVERE SPACE WEATHER: The National Academy of Sciences has just released the results of a study entitled Severe Space Weather Events--Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts. The 132-page document examines what might happen to our high-tech modern society in the event of a super solar flare followed by an extreme geomagnetic storm. Such a storm did occur in the year 1859. It electrified telegraph lines, shocking technicians and setting telegraph papers on fire; Northern Lights as far south as Cuba were so bright, you could read a newspaper by their eerie glow."

According to the report, "a contemporary repetition of that event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions." The report warns of widespread failures in telecommunications, electric power, banking and finance, and transportation; even water supplies could be disrupted. The total economic impact in the first year alone could reach $2 trillion--about 15 times greater than the costs of Hurricane Katrina. Depending on damage, full recovery from the solar storm could take 4 to 6 years.

No one knows how often super solar storms occur. We've only seen one like it in the past 200 years. The next one could be another 200 years away--or just 200 days. All the more reason to study space weather!

So, it won't be as bad as Wall Street then.

I don’t think we’ll have to worry about this anytime soon. Maybe after the sun awakes from it’s slumber, but it doesn’t seem to be in any hurry.

Does this mean, I need to get a better surge protector?

If we don't get a sunspot cycle going soon, we'll face the prospects of an ice age. That has a major impact on food production.

SOLAR BLAST: No sunspots? Yesterday the blank sun unleashed a solar flare without the usual aid of a sunspot. At 1408 UT on April 26th, Earth-orbiting satellites detected a surge of X-rays registering B3.8 on the Richter scale of solar flares. Shortly thereafter, SOHO coronagraphs photographed a coronal mass ejection (CME) billowing away from the sun:

The expanding cloud could deliver a glancing blow to Earth’s magnetic field late on April 28th or 29th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras when it arrives.

This strange solar flare came from a patch of sun (N08,E08) where magnetic fields were not intense enough to form a visible sunspot (sunspots are made of magnetism). Nevertheless, magnetic fields were present with sufficient energy and instability to produce a powerful explosion. NASA’s twin STEREO spacecraft, observing the sun from widely separated vantage points, recorded a million mph shock wave or “solar tsunami” spreading from the blast site through the sun’s atmosphere:

My "double decker, super dooper, triple doppler storm tracker" radar doesn't reach the sun.

Somehow the GOP will get the blame for it.

Supporting Data for “Resurrection Auroras”
By Steve Santini....

“There is a correlation between heightened sunspot activity and increased earthquake activity, especially during one of each month’s two earth-sun-moon alignments resulting in either a completely dark moon or full moon. Why the correlation between heightened sunspot activity and increased numbers of earthquakes?” Resurrection Auroras

Notice the correlation is not between the numbers of sunspots but the activity of those sunspots that are present. Heightened activity is defined in the above sentence as earth directed M and X class solar flares.

The following material supports the thesis that the two earthquakes each at Jesus’ death and at his resurrection were catalyzed by energy originating from one or more beta-gamma-delta sunspots as a CME that disrupted the magnetosphere, penetrated, at least in part, the atmosphere and either discharged at ground level or within the earth along the east west fault line that that runs down across the Mount of Olives through Jerusalem.

As one may recall from the article that on the day of Jesus’ crucifixion on the Mount of Olives the sun suddenly became darkened by hyper sunspot activity[1] and that the moon became its fullest during that month.

20M was open for a bit yesterday - heard some OH and UAs.

The piece sounds like a NASA rice bowl promotion.

The ‘bama must have them shaking in thier (moon) boots.

No one knows how often super solar storms occur.

They happen when too many Americans drive SUVs, of course...

I haven’t heard anything on 20M in a while. Will be nice to have some of the bands back.

There's no doubt that we should fear getting colder, more than getting warmer.

I use GasFET surge protectors for my ham radios. A little more expensive but worth it.
