Former President Jimmy Carter's attorney general, Griffin B. Bell, has died in an Atlanta hospital at age 90.
Bell was being treated for complications due to pancreatic cancer, and suffered from kidney disease for years.

I once called the Justice Department with a question. The first person I spoke to couldn't answer it and said to hang on a minute they would get someone who could. My call was transferred and answered by....Griffin Bell. We chatted a couple of minutes and I think that I was so dumbfounded that I forgot what my question was. What a gentleman.
My guess has always been that he was passing by an unanswered telephone and picked it up out of courtesy.

Bell also defended the first President Bush when some Democrats advocated prosecuting him after the Iran-Contra pardons and he endorsed George W. Bush.
