UN envoy: Nations must take Guantanamo inmates

VIENNA, Austria – More nations must take in Guantanamo inmates once the U.S.-run prison closes, the U.N.'s torture investigator said Monday, insisting that many were held simply because they were "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Manfred Nowak told Austrian radio he hopes more countries will set aside their misgivings and show solidarity with the incoming government of President-elect Barack Obama, who has vowed to shut the detention center in eastern Cuba.

Most European nations have refused to accept Guantanamo inmates, citing national security concerns. Nowak told public broadcaster ORF he understands their reluctance, "since the U.S. government for many years represented (the prisoners) as the most dangerous ever captured."

Yet many are harmless, Nowak said, appealing to EU nations to think of them as refugees and treat them as though they had fled persecution and gone directly to Europe to seek safe haven.

Words fail me in the severity of this idiots way of thinking. All I can hope for is that he opens his home as a half-way house to a few and puts HIS money where his mouth is.

I am reminded of a PETA-idiot lady who was determined that I wasn't going to kill a copperhead I found and pinned down. She went on and on about how the snake I had pinned down by the neck was "harmless," not poisonous at all. He has as much right to live as you do she wailed. Meanwhile the very angry snake was striking the stick I had him pinned with and flinging venom everywhere.

Finally I made her a deal. Pick the friendly little snake up and take him to your house or I'm going to cut his head off.

After a minute of hand-wringing she stomped off to call the police. When the police got their I was gone and the snake was harmless. (Snake heads don't work too well when detached from their bodies.)

So this nitwit from the UN (Go Figure) thinks that these poor slobs at Gitmo were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and we held them anyway. They are virtually HARMLESS. He and this idiot Peta woman need to adopt some of them.

You think! That why they were at Gitmo to begin with!

But just when has the U.N. said anything relevant?

This is delicious irony, ay. For years these folks have been lambasting the US about Gitmo, trying to get it closed. And now their precious UN has said that everyone gets to share a few Gitmo inmates around, all of them are saying “No thanks! They might be dangerous!”

Definition of “Hoist by their own Petard.”

It is rich!

Hopefully, B.O. will ignore his base once again, and do the right thing.

You know, maybe if other nations object to this UN plan, they can all pitch in a little money to keep Guantanamo running. I think they’ll soon figure out that maybe it was the best possible plan after all.

I wonder what the police would charge you with. Reptilecide?

I like your response. If the darn thing is harmless, then pick it up and carry it off. As a kid working at a golf course in Mississippi, I (an all my co-workers as well) killed every moccasin that I encountered, and I came across them near daily. Better that than them getting the jump on me at a later day. Kept the course safer for the members as well.

Believe it or not, in Alpharetta, Georgia it is ILLEGAL TO KILL A SNAKE, even a poisonous one. Too many New York liberals moved in and started making weird laws. So I could have been charged with cruelty to animals.

Fortunately I was working to rehab a house down the street and not living there so I couldn't be found. God knows there was probably a manhunt for the cruel snake killer Republican. Did I mention that I accidentally ran over the snake as it crawled across the neighborhood road. The snake was leaving a yard with young children in it and going into another yard with young children in it.

I killed the snake with a potato digger borrowed from a country boy that owned the yard where the children were playing. When I took it from him he joked about which snake was I going to kill first (referring to the idiot Peta woman). I never checked but I am pretty sure he was never charged with being an accessory to snake murder.

Liberal idiots.

That would be great, but I’m not gonna hold my breath on that one.

Have every local who catches a poisonous snake release it on the lawn of whatever serves as the Alpharetta seat of government.

Transporting a few hundred venomous snakes a day in reach of liberal government might be offensive to the snakes, but ...

They would probably charge us with an act of terrorism, but I really like the idea.

The idea was never to take them off our hands, but to tell us what to do with them and how to treat them -- on our soil and at our expense, not theirs. Think "country club," but with an overwhelmingly Muslim atmosphere.

This is such a delicious outcome. It gets no better than this. “Be careful of what you wish for: you might just get it.”

Bags I the International Community begin pressurizing His Excellency that it’s OK, no need to close Gitmo after all!

And Bags I he bows to International pressure. It’s the path of least resistence, and his muslim brothers won’t mind. Too much, anyrate.

I can fully understand this. The barren wastelands of Afghanistan are such a tourist hotspot I'm sure many were just camera-toting wayfarers taking pics of the hot Afghan women.
