French warship Sunday foiled attempts by Somalian pirates in the Gulf of Aden to seize two cargo vessels and intercepted 19 people, the French president's office said. "Three days after a French vessel thwarted an attack on a Panamanian cargo ship" the frigate Jean de Vienne conducted a "decisive action" against "two new attacks" it said in a statement. "The 19 Somali pirates who tried to seize the two boats were intercepted," it added, saying they carried weapons, ammunition and material for boarding ships. ...

The frenches finally did something? The only thing they did wrong is they shouldn’t capture them. Blow them up and watch them sink.
It is not embarrassing. We don’t need to get involved when others are doing the job.
I think it would be more of a deterrent if done in about 8 feet of water, just offshore.

I don't want to play the role of Google Master here, but there is an interesting back story to the pirate situation that goes beyond race and religion (at least according to this man's research):
The French turned the pirates over to the Somalis.
This is the same as a “Get Out Of Jail Free” Card.
Are the French nuts?
Turn them over to the Philippines where the punishment for piracy is to be electrocuted until you catch fire.
Hopefully getting re-populated, within sight of the guillotine.
There have been several articles actually. All posted here at FR. I would have to figure the same keywords as you would have to do for a search. Probably “Somalia Pirates”. Something along those lines.
After I catch up to my reading this morning’s break, I’ll see if I can find one of those articles and post the link.

There are more articles detailing the lifestyles of the Pirates and the reverance Somali’s have for them due their influence upon the Somali economy in other articles as well. You will probably find them under keyword “Pirates” as I found this one. I have to run errands, so I haven’t time to persue more right now.

There are more articles out there I have found links to, but I found several that have been moved, and I don’t have the time to chase them down.
My original post is based upon much reading here at FR, and I stand with my comments in that post. The Pirates are in fact revered by many in their country.
