French warship Sunday foiled attempts by Somalian pirates in the Gulf of Aden to seize two cargo vessels and intercepted 19 people, the French president's office said. "Three days after a French vessel thwarted an attack on a Panamanian cargo ship" the frigate Jean de Vienne conducted a "decisive action" against "two new attacks" it said in a statement. "The 19 Somali pirates who tried to seize the two boats were intercepted," it added, saying they carried weapons, ammunition and material for boarding ships. ...

WHY?
They are pirates/terrorists.
If they are encountered in International Waters they should be shot and dropped into the ocean.
What good does “holding” them do?
They are probably being held in far better conditions then in which they lived so this would not be a deterrent to others.
France nor anyone else will want to hold them indefinitely, so at sometime they will be released to resume their pirating activities.

From what reading I’ve encountered on the matter so far, it appears these pirates are revered, and live quite well at their home in Somalia these days. National hero’s actually.

Does this mean that Bush administration is kind of weak proposing to let go most Guantanomos detenais captured in the same condition?
And until it's determined what should be done with these pirates, let's keep it that way. Let's not start another Gitmo housing project for the world's wayward Muslims. If world opinion won't allow us to "hang them from the yard arm," we should leave them alone until world opinion changes and we can properly dispose of them.

They should be “released” with cinder blocks chained to their feet, in about 4,000 feet of water.

That looks fair ... but what are US warships are doing in these sme waters right now?
After a period of detention, they’ll be released into the custody of the Somali government. Oh, wait... there is no Somali government.

That warships (French, US, Indian, whatever) blast the pirates out of the water and off of planet earth?
Are you suggesting that gunfire or threat of gunfire from pirates be returned with massive retaliatory bombardment from ships guns, helicopter gunships or jet fighters?
Are you suggesting that these pirates be turned into a kind of pasty carbon sludge on the surface of the sea?
Are you suggesting that the retaliation be of such force that not a single hair of a single pirate head could be recovered from the sea, even if someone were to search the targeted waters with a fine tooth comb?
Is that the kind of thing that you're suggesting?
If so, it's not a bad suggestion.
Why is it OK for France to attack these Somalia Muslims far from their own shores but it is not OK for Israel to defend themselves in their own backyard?
They would probably be there to gather sufficient intelligence information to enable them to strike a decisive blow when the proper time arrives.
ive been hearing on the radio/reading the same thing. apparently these pirates go back home and spend like a rap video, so the locals love it. myself, i dont have a link.
When the literature arrives it simply advises you to buy a rickety old inflatable raft, a few rusty guns and an eye patch, then sit in the sea lane and wait for the French to “hold” you. Good food, health care, clothing, etc. Life in Somalia was never this good!
The French will have to set up a “Le Guantanamo” of their own.
Why? Isn’t it about time some other countries show some balls regarding international terrorism? I can’t count the threads that complained we were the world’s police force.

This is exactly how it should be. The French have a strong military presence in the Republic of Djibouti, which neighbors Somalia to the north. They have the positioning and presence to take care of the business at hand. Better the French be swatting flies in their own backyard than for us to travel half way around the world with a can of Raid.
Note to N. Sarcozy... pull the trigger. The lawyers at the Hague will tie you in knots.
