LOS ANGELES, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A 114-year-old Los Angeles woman has become the oldest person in the world, hospital sources said on Saturday.

Gertrude Baines, a resident of a nursing home, assumed that title when a 115-year-old woman in Portugal died Friday.

Baines was born in 1894 when Grover Cleveland was U.S. president. Her parents were both slaves as children.

She cast a ballot for Barack Obama in November's presidential election, according to the local media report.

The previous holder of the title, a 115-year-old woman in Portugal named Maria de Jesus, died quietly after breakfast Friday.

Hospital officials said they are preparing for a flood of attention to their patient, Baines.

Baines' favorite hobbies were eating crispy bacon and occasionally watching "The Jerry Springer Show," according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Guinness Book of World Records had said that prior to the Portugal woman's passing, Baines ranked number two.

A daughter of slaves lives long enough to vote for a black man as President...and more amazing still, lives long enough to regret it.

Just goes to show you that age doesn't always bring wisdom.

The bad side of being named a City, State, nation, or World’s oldest person is that your name goes right to the top of various Death Pools, and everyone starts betting on your demise.

Yeah, but I bet these are stubborn people who have long enjoyed proving people wrong. And so, it must kill them to die!

I was also wondering if this article would say that the Portuguese woman also voted for Obama, even though she lives in Portugal.

Well, well. And did she then say, "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel"?

I'm surprised this obamaphile missed an opportunity to show again that He is the One we have been waiting for.

Yeah, but it seems every month we hear that the world’s oldest person dies, seems like a pretty dangerous profession. ;)

They just had to throw that in.. how about using that line to discuss what she has done in her own life, all that she has seen, or how she stayed healthy to live to 114. She must have an amazing story, why make it about Bambi?

Maybe congress should call a special session and a blue ribbon panel, spend millions of taxpayer dollars studying this crisis that is affecting our elderly- death by old age... Somehow it has to be Bush’s fault.

Really. Any “World’s Oldest Person” has a life expectency of 115 to 120 years, tops. :-)

She looks amazing for 114. Doesn’t look a day over 90.

Of all people voting for Obama, I sure understand her desire to do it, for race alone. Her parents were slaves. It’s actually kind of cool. G-d bless her, despite her vote!

And you would have thought that being a child of slaves would have made her a lifelong Republican, the party that brought her freedom. But what do I know.
