Has Israel learned its lesson?
Boston Globe ^ | January 1, 2009 | Jeff Jacoby

ISRAEL'S 2006 war against Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed terrorist army based in Lebanon, was a disaster - an ill-planned operation that did more damage to Israel's military reputation than to Hezbollah's resolve and influence. Now, as it fights Hamas in Gaza, Israel seems determined not to repeat the mistakes of two years ago

That's true. We dropped leaflets for several days warning Hiroshima that they were about to be destroyed. The army units stationed there probably pressured many civilians to stay, thus insuring their honorable deaths.

I have had as little as possible to do with massholes since college in the 60's, and they were pretty far gone even then. It appears that New England, like an appendix, serves no apparent purpose but once inflamed threatens the health of the body politic just the same.

I don't think so.

“...there is no need to worry about collateral damage with those in Gaza. They chose their leaders freely....it is not like they aren’t complicit. They are the “enemy” and should be treated as such.”

Interesting. This is exactly the same logic that al-Queda uses to justify their attacks on western civilians. Like you, they believe that we are all combatants because we elect our leaders.

By your justification then, our enemies are free to attack your family or mine because you vote. To reverse it, you have no justification to ever cause injury to civilians in a dictatorship since they have no choice over who leads them.

Personally, I can’t believe how dumb world leaders are concerning war. First, war is the LAST resort. That should be made clear by leaders. Second, if we are PUSHED into war it will be TOTAL and COMPLETE. We will keep what we gain and NEVER give it back unless WE chose to. Those should be the universal rules of war.

For Israel, Hamas has been lobbing rockets into Israel for the last couple years. They should have said, if one rocket comes after a certain deadline, that rocket will be the last straw and we WILL declare WAR. When that rocket came, Israel should have formally declared WAR on Gaza. From there they should have done exactly what they have done up until this point. However, nobody should be talking about peace.

Next, they should invade and subdue the population and achieve the total capitulation of the leadership. They should root out and destroy Hamas and they should set up an occupational authority. Next, they should either re-annex Gaza and resettle the population or make peace with Egypt as their only partner, cut Gaza down the middle, give half to Egypt and keep half for themselves.

WAR is WAR...people should get used to that...especially in the middle east.

"Go Israel before Obama tries to do something to interfere."

And if Obama does try to interfere, I suggest that we real patriots and loyalist Christians, send a loud and clear message to Israel, by sending money and prayers supporting the Israeli effort; even if it's only a few dollars a week!

Are we not free citizens of the U.S ? Then lets not wait on Washington to do the right thing, lets act individually and as a group if we can! Christians: Stand up now!

Gaza by the Numbers

On Dec. 27, Israel began "Operation Cast Lead" to stop Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza from continuing its years-long campaign of attacking Israeli civilians with thousands of rockets, missiles and mortars. Following are facts and figures to help journalists cover Israel’s defensive efforts in Gaza:

Iran-backed Hamas Rocket, Mortar Attacks and Nuclear Developments

9,400+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza since 2003. [1]

3,200+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza in 2008 alone. [2]

543+ rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israeli territory during the ceasefire from June 19 to Dec. 19, 2008. [4]

28 deaths caused by rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israel since 2001. The dead include Israelis, Palestinians and foreign workers. Since the ceasefire ended, Iran-backed Palestinian groups in Gaza fired rockets and mortars that killed an Israeli-Arab construction worker and a mother of four who was seeking shelter in a bus station as a rocket warning siren sounded. [5]

1,000+ people in Israel injured from rockets and mortars fired from Gaza since 2001, including Israelis, Palestinians and foreign workers. Since the ceasefire, 44 Israelis have been injured and 200 have been treated for shock. [6]

20,000 Hamas troops Israel is targeting as part of “Operation Cast Lead.” [7]

750,000 number of Israeli civilians Hamas is targeting and can reach. [8]

15 seconds Israelis have to get to a bomb shelter once a warning siren has sounded. [9]

8 years that Israel has been hit by rockets and mortars from Gaza [10]

3 mosques in Gaza used as weapons, ammunitions and explosives depots that were struck by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the operation in Gaza. [11]

4 UN Security Council resolutions passed since 2006 to try to stop Iran from enriching uranium. [12]

5,000+ number of centrifuges operating in Iran to enrich uranium, the material used to produce a nuclear weapon. [13]

Israel’s Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

179 truckloads of humanitarian aid that have been delivered through Israeli crossings into Gaza since the beginning of Operation Cast Lead, including basic food commodities, medication, medical supplies, donations of governments and blood units.

106 additional truckloads of humanitarian expected to arrive in Gaza on Jan. 31 [14]

6,500 tons of aid transported into Gaza at the request of international organizations, the Palestinian Authority and various governments since the beginning of Operation Cast Lead. The World Food Program informed Israel that it will cease shipment of food to Gaza because warehouses are at full capacity, with enough food to last two weeks. [15]

1 zoo, the “Katifari,” that housed hundreds of animals and was moved. [34]

10,000 people who were employed in agriculture and related industries in Gush Katif, including 5,000 Palestinians. [35]

The only war Israel lost in 2006 was the PR war.

The point i am making, is that Hamas was elected freely by a large majority of the Palistenian population. Hamas made no bones about the fact they wished the destruction of their neighbor, an independent and peaceful state. You can’t appoint leaders who openly kill and maim the citizens of other countries and expect to have immunity from retaliation. By choosing Hamas, they chose war, and all that comes with it. Show me where i am wrong.

A dictatorship is another matter when it comes to civilian casualties. The Gaza Strip is no dictatorship. Hamas is their freely elected government.

And frankly you are wrong about Al Qaeda and their justification for killing civilians. Al Qaeda wants to kill us because we are infidels. Not because of our elected leaders. Obama supporters and other appeasers will begin to see this soon. It doesn’t matter who we elect, we are dirty pigs to them who should be slaughtered.

Do i advocate the direct targeting of civilian centers. Of course not, it provides no strategic or tactical product. British General Harris tried this approach in WWII and learned it was not a fruitful task. But if i were an israeli, and there was a Grad launcher in a hospital court yard in Gaza, there would no hesitation on my part in striking it with the necessary firepower to protect my citizens. Even knowing it will result in the death of “non-combatants”. And in practice, the Palestinians facilitate Hamas and other terrorists on a daily basis, which makes them complicit in the murder of innocent Israelis, and in my opinion, justifies them as legitimate military targets in many cases.

To do anything else, is frankly, illogical.

I’d rather him be a passive president than an activist one (he is a Democrat, after all).

A Democrat President that does nothing... is survivable.
