Ski manager shot after professing Christianity (shot for being a Catholic)

NEDERLAND, Colo. – A gunman who broke into a staff meeting at a Colorado ski resort ranting about religion asked the manager what he believed and shot him twice when the victim responded he was Catholic, according to reports published today about the tragedy.

The gunman later was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in a firefight alongside a snowy mountain road, authorities confirmed.

The Boulder County coroner identified the gunman as Derik A. Bonestroo, 24, who had been living in Nederland. According to a report in the Boulder Daily Camera, witnesses said Bonestroo burst into the staff meeting yesterday at the Eldora Mountain Resort near here.

Sheriff Joe Pelle said Bonestroo was yelling something about religion to employees when resort General Manager Brian Mahon heard the commotion and came into the room. The Camera said witnesses reported the shooter asked Mahon which religion he believed, and when Mahon said he was Catholic, the shooter fired twice and killed him.

Sheriff's Commander Phil West said, "There are various interpretations about what was said. Witnesses told us (Bonestroo) had been through some emotional crisis."

Mahon, 49, leaves behind a wife and two children. He had worked at Eldora since 1991.

According to a statement from Boulder County Undersheriff Tom Shomaker, deputy John Seifert was on duty in Nederland when the call came in about the shooting. Told the shooter had fled and given a description of the vehicle, Seifer spotted a suspect vehicle on the Peak-to-Peak Highway only a few miles downhill from the ski area. After a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle stopped, the sheriff said.

"The male driver immediately opened fire on the deputy after stopping his vehicle," the sheriff's department statement said.

In the city we called that "death by cop."

Or "suicide by cop"?

The killer was crazy or on drugs or both. Religious obsessions are common among people like that, and for some reason, a hatred of Christianity - probably because it’s the dominant religion in the US - is also very common among them.

This was a terrible thing, but the guy was a nut, and I don’t think anybody should read anything else into this.

Prayers for the victim and his family on this New Year’s Day.

Sounds like we may have a martyr here. It would be nice to find some way to do something for his family. I hope they are able to think of the welcome this guy got on the other shore.

NEDERLAND - He walked into the locker room at the Eldora ski area dressed in black, a pistol in his hand, shouted something about religion then fired a shot into the ceiling - the first moments of a violent outburst that shocked this sleepy mountain town.

In a matter of minutes, the popular general manager at Eldora Mountain Resort would lay dead, and the gunman himself would be killed in a gunbattle with a deputy sheriff along a scenic highway several miles away.

The shootings on a windy, sunny morning in western Boulder County left witnesses reeling and residents of Nederland shaken.

And they left a lot of questions about what was on the mind of the gunman, a newly hired lift operator at Eldora that the Boulder County coroner’s office identified as Derik A. Bonestroo, 24, of Nederland.

Bonestroo graduated in 2003 from Lyons High School, where he played on the football team. He doesn’t have a criminal record in Colorado, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

“His motive at this point is still open to speculation,” said Boulder County sheriff’s Cmdr. Phil West.

What is known is that Brian Mahon, a 49-year-old married father of two daughters, lost his life after stepping into that locker room. And sheriff’s Deputy John Seifert escaped with some relatively minor cuts after the gunman fired several shots into the front of his Tahoe - including at least one that pierced the windshield.

‘Very agitated and angry’

The trouble apparently started in town a little before 7 a.m. when Cynthia Davis, an employee at the local newspaper, the Nederland Mountain Ear, awakened to someone pounding on her front door. After Davis answered, she was confronted by a tall, slender man with a pistol strapped to his right thigh and dressed in black.

The man, whom Davis described as “very agitated and angry,” was looking for some former neighbors of hers who worked at the ski area.

“I don’t know where they are - leave me alone,” she told the man, and he left.

Her neighbors, whom she did not identify, moved out of town recently. Davis said she did not call police, in part because she didn’t believe her eyes as she stared at the pistol.

“I kept telling myself that it had to be a walkie- talkie or something because it didn’t make sense why he would have a weapon,” Davis said. “I thought he was a cop.”

Five miles west of town, at the Eldora ski area, lift operators trickled into the locker room in the pump house near the base for their regular morning meeting. Outside, bitter winds howled through the valleys.

Shortly after 7 a.m., between 15 and 20 workers were in the room when Bonestroo entered.

Rob Linde, spokesman for the resort, said the man was a lift operator who had been hired for this ski season.

Bonestroo spewed something religious - a statement that was heard differently by witnesses.

“There are various interpretations of what was said,” Cmdr. West said.

Then the man fired a single shot through the ceiling from his black handgun, West said.

Mahon, working in an adjacent room, stepped through a door to investigate.

According to witnesses, the shooter asked Mahon which religion he believed in. When Mahon answered that he was a Catholic, the shooter fired at him, several witnesses said. Bonestroo shot Mahon twice, once in the chest, once in the head.

“I was scared for my life - as scared as I’ve ever been,” said Fabio Sales, who was in the room.

Several workers called 911. It was 7:26 a.m.

Gunbattle erupts

Deputy Seifert, who has been with the department for nearly four years and had prior law enforcement experience, was on patrol in the area. After hearing the radio call, he sped toward the resort.

Near Nederland High School, on County Road 130, Seifert saw Bonestroo’s gold Infiniti pass him going the other way. Seifert turned around to pursue the sedan.

In Nederland, Bonestroo turned onto Colorado 119, the winding two-lane road known as the Peak to Peak Highway for its majestic views of snow-capped mountains. About a mile south of the city, on a sweeping curve, Bonestroo pulled onto the shoulder.

A moment later, Bonestroo started firing at Seifert’s Tahoe, which was parked about 60 feet behind him - either after opening the driver’s door or leaning out the window, Cmdr. West said. Bullets tore through the radiator, hood and windshield, spraying Seifert with glass as he scrambled out the driver’s door with his AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.

Seifert took up a position near the right rear corner of his vehicle, West said, and opened fire, killing Bonestroo, who slumped behind the wheel.

As investigators worked at the scene, bullet holes could be seen in the back window and windshield of the Infiniti.

Someone living along the highway called 911 to report gunfire. That call came in at 7:36 a.m.

Resort to reopen today

The ski area was closed Tuesday - Linde said it would reopen at 8:30 this morning - and traffic was diverted around a section of Colorado 119 for most of the day.

West said investigators were perplexed as to what led to the violence. West said friends of the gunman indicated that he had been “experiencing some emotional crisis,” but he did not elaborate.

News staff writer James B. Meadow contributed to this report.

We live in Nederland during the summer, and I have never heard that legend. The PI is my favorite hangout, and the owner a good friend.

The town is a strange mixture of conservative old timers, liberal hippies and their hippy parents from the 60’s, and newbies who tend to be professionals. Usually it makes for a friendly group, but the transient folks that come through, and sometimes stay for a while, can be a source of trouble - drugs, alcohol, and crime. Overall, it is mostly a quiet mountain town and beautiful in the summer.

***Therefore, it doesn’t follow that the victim was shot because he was Catholic. ***

According to the news report I just read, he heard a commotion, walked into the room and asked “What’s going on?” and was then shot.

16. A 16 year old. When he was caught he claimed to be a runaway from another State. Truth is, he lived blocks away and his single parent mother allowed him to run around as he pleased. No discipline whatsoever. In fact, she was angry that he was caught. She was angry I held him “against his will”.

The perp was 24. Average age for the onset of schizophrenia is 16-25. I’d say that’s what was going on.

Indeed.

A few years ago an acquaintance informed me that I was a Catholic not a Christian. She was a typical judgemental evangelical (yeah, I know. I stepped in it this time.)

Most don't even understand the meaning of CHRISTian.

I would rather die professing my Faith than to live because I denied Him. Prayers for this Family.
