Next year is set to be one of the top-five warmest on record, British climate scientists said on Tuesday.

The average global temperature for 2009 is expected to be more than 0.4 degrees celsius above the long-term average, despite the continued cooling of huge areas of the Pacific Ocean, a phenomenon known as La Nina.

That would make it the warmest year since 2005, according to researchers at the Met Office, who say there is also a growing probability of record temperatures after next year.

Currently the warmest year on record is 1998, which saw average temperatures of 14.52 degrees celsius - well above the 1961-1990 long-term average of 14 degrees celsius.

I think he is repeating a false claim. I believe 1998 was downgraded by a Canadian pajama blogger who forced NASA GISS to recant and revise their record. To be correct the author should have said ‘Currently the warmest year on record is 1934.’

While this may not prove anything one way or another, it sure does leave a different impression.

It took 30+ years to turn that tide and to where at least some recognition of the fallacy has come out. How about Acid Rain? The dangers of microwave ovens, cell phones, high power lines, the “Ozone Hole!!!!!!” Do you remember the stories of us all having skin cancer soon? I grew up 100% sure that by the time I'm an adult all our forests would have succumb to acid rain. Never mind the Rain Forest which also should already have disappeared, or our rivers that are so polluted that it will take hundreds of years for them to cleans themselves. Temperatures could drop to 50 below zero in parts of Alaska

FAIRBANKS - Bitterly cold weather slid over from Canada and settled into Interior Alaska with forecasters saying temperatures could continue to slide to nearly 50 degrees below zero in coming days.

Yes they should. In fact, in December we had three days out of thirty one with sunspots. That curve should be pegged at zero since 12/13, and we’re entering 2009 with an entirely blank Sun. (In fact, in my opinion compared with data from Galileo’s day probably only one day out of thirty one had a spot, since Galileo didn’t have satellite telescopes for observation.)

The solar minimum continues entirely unabated for now.
