I spent my first Christmas away from home in Vietnam - 1970. I was at a Fire Support Base just North of Nui Ba Dinh. We were allowed 2 seats for the Bob Hope Show in Long Binh. The First Sergeant put the names of everyone in the battery on slips of paper and drew two from a steel pot. They were picked up by helicopter in the morning and were back that evening. Not even a day out of the bush.
I ate my rolled turkey roast dinner standing beside a “deuce and a half” using the fender for a table. I listened to the Bob Hope Show live on a cheap Panasonic radio while I ate.
There was a Christmas truce (cease fire) for 24 hours, but we were the only ones who followed it. “Charlie” popped at us all night on Christmas Eve.
Good evening SLB and thank you for your service to our country.
Thank you for your service, SLB!
God Bless!
Goodness what a first Christmas away from home yours was. Thanks for your service and WELCOME HOME! (Remember lima beans and ham?)
I was at the USMCAS El Toro for my first ‘away from home’ Christmas (1965).
