Terrorists go digital, using iPhones, Google to coordinate attacks

In Egypt, the GPS utility on the iPhone has been banned from the general public and is restricted to military use.

The restrictions stem from fears Cairo has that terrorists can utilize the mapping tool to coordinate attacks, and Apple, which developed the popular gadget, has acquiesced and removed GPS devices from iPhones sold in Egypt.

Their fears are not unfounded. Last month terrorists attacking Mumbai used Google Earth to plan the blitz, according to findings from India's security services.

Better start banning maps and 2 way radios or cell phones! Maybe terrorists will use them too!

GPS can be turned off with one switch, military code only.......it can also be made to be less accurate.

"When GPS is banned only criminals will have GPS."
"Is this supposed mean anything?"

It means that cryptical doesn't understand that S.A. and A.S. dictate who benefits from GPS, and who is victimized thereby. GPS will never give any more info than its operators wish it to, and there will never be any need to 'ban' anything.

"Better start banning maps and 2 way radios or cell phones!"

In Mexico, both are classed as "munitions." - Maps that are available to the general public in Mexico are always degraded, and somewhat schematic, rather than accurate scale maps.

This will not stop a determined criminal. Just like gun laws don't. The terrorists will just buy their iPhones in some other country.

What this does is punish and inconvenience law abiding citizens that could benefit from GPS phones in their daily life.

If it would save just one child, shouldn’t the iPhone be banned?

Just in passing...
Saw a commercial this morning. An obviously Middle Eastern man opening Christmas gifts, (three to be exact.) All three were cell phones.
The producer of the ad HAD to really hate the advertiser.
Duh...

You’re right about the SA mode, but I doubt it will ever be used. Except in the case of an all out Nuclear war. General aviation, etc. is too invested in it.
