Man Shoots Armed Robber In Oak Park

(OAK PARK, Ill.) Police are searching for a man who shot an armed robber after the man refused to give up his leather coat Sunday night at an Oak Park gas station.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. at a gas station at North and Hayes avenues, in the northeast corner of Oak Park, according to Village of Oak Park Communications Director David Powers.

A man was putting gas in his car when he was approached by two other men who demanded his leather coat. The man in the coat refused, took out a handgun and shot one of the attempted robbers once in the mouth and once in his side before fleeing the scene, Powers said.

The injured man was taken to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park for treatment of his gunshot wounds but was later transferred to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County. He had apparently lost several teeth and suffered injury to his tongue, Powers said. It was believed that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police recovered a handgun from the scene but were unclear Monday morning whether the gun matched the one used in the shooting.

Two other men, believed to have been associated with the would-be robbers, were sitting in a nearby car during the shooting.

All four men were being questioned by police, Powers said.

No one has been charged in shooting as of Monday afternoon.

Ask me why I never clean the mud off my vehicle. Works for traffic cameras too. Ask me why I’m partial to revolvers? Hint: no casings left behind.

Well, well, well......the injured robbery attemptee was taken to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois and lost several teeth.

I was born and raised in Oak Park....in the very same hospital as above, as a matter of fact. Oak Park is upper middle-class in that particular section of town. It's a western suburb of Chicago, a very tree-lined and beautiful village that puts great emphasis on education and always has. Ernest Hemingway went to Oak Park High School.

Now all the perp needs for Christmas is his two front teeth, hah.

P.S.....folks, please don't equate the western suburbs of Chicago with the Daley machine Windy City itself. Night and day. These suburbs are conservative and mostly Republican. One of them sent Rep. Henry Hyde to the U.S. Congress for decades.

Oak Park Village politicians are still planning on keeping their total gun ban in effect.

Oak Park still working to uphold gun ban

Monday, November 24, 2008

The northern suburb of Winnetka repealed its 20-year handgun ban last week, joining others such as Morton Grove and Wilmette. But despite what one recent report said, Oak Park is still working to uphold its ordinance.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Washington D.C.’s handgun ban. The National Rifle Association then filed lawsuits against various communities, including Oak Park, to effect similar results.

Winnetka put up the white flag, for fear of paying thousands in legal fees to fight the NRA, according to the Chicago Tribune. Oak Park, meanwhile, is teaming up with the City of Chicago to save costs. Chicago-based law firm Mayer Brown is providing pro bono services to help Oak Park in the fight, says Village Manager Tom Barwin.

Oak Park was served with the NRA lawsuit in August, Barwin said, which is currently in the appeals process. Village Attorney Ray Heise is researching the case to assess if the village is at risk of any legal costs, Barwin added.

The village believes its ban, in place since 1984, will hold up in court because voters approved it in a referendum the following year.

“This isn’t like some village board adopted it willy-nilly based on the impulse of one moment,” Barwin said. “This was an ordinance that was voted upon by a 54-percent majority of Oak Parkers.”

The NRA’s lawsuit names the Village of Oak Park and President David Pope as defendants. The plaintiffs are the NRA and two village residents, NRA members Robert Klein Engler and Dr. Gene Reisinger. Both men declined to comment to the Wednesday Journal in July

Barwin is uncertain when the next step of the legal process will take place. The suit is in a “quiet period” as attorneys are finalizing briefs.

The Oak Park Board of Health hopes to produce a plan next year if the village is forced to repeal its handgun ban. It would focus on safety, education and health impacts in an environment where handguns were legal here for the first time in 24 years, said Frank Vozak, chair of the health board.

“Oak Park has been a leader in being gun free, meaning many in Oak Park don’t know much about a handgun,” Vozak said at a meeting earlier this month.

I would expect that the single most overriding concern, in Chicago, is avoiding detection of your defensive firearm. A Sig P239, a compact 9mm, is 6.6”, the Kahr PM9 is 5.3”, while the Tomcat is 4.9”.

All of which spray cartridge cases (ie. evidence against you) all over the landscape, should you use them.

A snubbie's what you want.

I lived near Ridgeland and Roosevelt. My exwife’s family is from there. We had one of the six houses on the block of Washington Erving School.

I could’t wait to get out of there.

That makes sense, thanks. And you’re right...bottom line is the would-be victim wasn’t. Merry Christmas!

No worries. Some people don’t know uniforms. Or Nicholas Cage...and after his last few movies I can understand why. And, with the way uniforms are changing those who don’t see them or work with those wear them can get confused. Hell, I’m Navy, but wearing Army ACU’s with Navy rank insignia...which confuses the hell out of most Soldiers.
Merry Christmas...
