Pakistan scrambled fighter jets over several major cities on Monday, including the federal capital, as it said it had stepped up "vigilance" in view of the "current environment".
The aircraft roared over Islamabad, the nearby garrison city of Rawalpindi and other cities this afternoon as Air Force spokesman Air Commodore Humayun Viqar Zephyr said in a statement: "in view of the current environment, PAF has enhanced its vigilance."
The brief statement from the air force did not give any more details. Residents in the capital made panic calls to media stations to ask about the low-flying aircrafts.
The air sorties by the PAF came a day after External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said India is keeping "all options open" to deal with the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks.
India has blamed Pakistan-based elements, including the Lashkar-e-Tayiba terror group, for the attacks and asked Pakistan to take action against them.
Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi too has said that India could give a "befitting reply" to those involved in the Mumbai attacks.
The two countries were involved in a spat last week over alleged violations of Pakistani airspace by Indian warplanes.
Pakistan lodged a formal protest that Indian jets had violated an agreement on airspace violations in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Lahore sectors, a charge flatly denied by India.
Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal is in Delhi to attend a meeting of all Indian envoys and Pakistani High Commissioner Shahid Malik is in Islamabad for consultations.
Not good...
A show of force for no reason.
Nuclear saber rattling!! Prayers going up for both countries to keep their heads!!
Um... you do know that Paki fighters can carry a simple nuclear bomb, right?
JUST FYI:
India’s arsenal: Gravity nuke bombs
Pakistan’s: Nuke missiles
Surprising: Most assessments put Pakistan’s nuke capabilities over those of India —marginally.

It’s a threat - see, fighters are *easy* to destroy on the ground, not so easy when they’re in the air. It’s two threats, really.
1. “Don’t try a retaliatory strike (for Mumbai) because we already have our air defenses up and waiting for you.”
2. “You won’t catch our air force on the ground; even if you *do* overwhelm most of it, you’re not going to be able to get them all - and if you miss one plane, do you *really* want to take the chance that it’s one with a nuclear bomb on the centerline pylon?”
The Pakis are trying to communicate to the Indians that any attacking bombers would be shot down. From their own missles, the Pakis know there is no defense, so the Indian’s best bet wold be a surprise first strike. A very destabilizing situation!
Any A/C flying a area-protective Combat Air Patrol would be as high as possible, but at least FL 350.
1. Better, longer range radar picture w/o clutter. Look down, shoot down is no problem with current Doppler.
2. Better speed for an intercept.
3. Much reduced specific fuel consumption. Stay aloft much longer on same fuel.
4. Much less crew fatigue.
At low level, this was just a PR stunt to wake up the populace.
very destabilizing indeed. The last few days, there has been less and less talk out of New Delhi and Islamabad about bringing the Mumbai terrorists to justice. It appears New Delhi has grown tired of Paki’s talk of a “crackdown” on the militants with little to no action.
Reports the past couple days have been almost exclusively about additional deployments, heightened alert levels, etc.
this one could go hot in a hurry . . . everyone is already cocked, locked and ready to go
So Pakistan is looking to bomb their own cities? More like their military will bomb their government and take over.
If India did anything it would have nothing to do with Pakistan’s cities and everything to do with the dozens of training sites that terrorist are using.
This story is designed for media attention. Almost like Pakistan is begging India not to do anything and hold them accountable. The old Soviet style military parade being replaced with this rubbish.
Pakistan needs to see their civilian government take control once and for all.
A purge of the ISI and military sympathies with the Taliban and other terrorist groups would be a good start.
Putting a couple of terror heads under house arrest isn’t going to cut it.
Nor should it for the Indian government or with the Indian people.
Pakistan is tightening the noose around its own neck.
Kurukshetra War - Kali Yuga ping...

Maybe a high-low set? The pair up top is the real CAP, the ones down low are more to settle the populace’s minds?
Let's all just forget about how Pakistan violated India's entire population and it's living space with it's unspeakable acts of terror in Mumbai.
Fighters are being deployed to forward bases. There has been a change in air def posture from passive to active.
