EXCLUSIVE:
For much of the past seven years, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have waged a clandestine operation inside the White House. It has involved thousands of military personnel, private presidential letters and meetings that were kept off their public calendars or sometimes left the news media in the dark.
Their mission: to comfort the families of soldiers who died fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and to lift the spirits of those wounded in the service of their country.
On Monday, the president is set to make a more common public trip - with reporters in tow - to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, home to many of the wounded and a symbol of controversy earlier in his presidency over the quality of care the veterans were receiving.
But the size and scope of Mr. Bush's and Mr. Cheney's private endeavors to meet with wounded soliders and families of the fallen far exceed anything that has been witnessed publicly, according to interviews with more than a dozen officials familiar with the effort.

We will be missing his human qualities very shortly, as I can only imagine the private scoffing/ridicule Barry will hold towards those “stupid enough” to serve their country.
Does anyone have the slightest doubt that were this sort of action even to be CONSIDERED by a Democrat official in any capacity, it would have been done with the full fanfare of an adoring media? Indeed, it would have been the media event of the millennium.
The President and Mrs. Bush are class acts.
To think that they replaced the criminal clintons and will be replaced by another crime family . . .
It’s no secret that I’m no fan of GWB these days, but this was and is a good thing and he gets kudos from me, ditto for the man who OUGHT to be getting ready to take the Oath of Office next month, Vice President Dick Cheney.
Wonder what the BO family will sell off for a kickback or some other grease...
A stark contrast to Barry, who has never performed a truly sellfess act in his entire life.
Last Friday afternoon, I suffered through a TV show hosted by that fat blowhard Dr. Phil about how the current Bush/Cheney administration is letting Disabled and suffering PTSD veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan fall through the crack and not receive the help they need.
Dr. Phil should be ashamed of himself for exploiting these injured and disabled veterans just to get better ratings.
President Bush and Vice President Cheney are less concerned with this sort of "tooting your own horn" type publicity and more concerned with helping our veterans than Dr. Phil, and all of the other phony liberals who can't wait to criticize this President and Vice President.
I for one is proud to have voted for the BUSH/Cheney Ticket twice. God bless them and our U.S Military Service Men and Women and their families.
That’s alright. The average american appears to care more about how much $$ gets loaded on their government issued EBT card.
Irak is just a place where we are wasting money that could be spent for the chrome rim and hydrauics tax credit.
The way for American to get out of this economic crisis is to invest in our cars, or so I’ve heard.
For all of Mr. Bush’s faults and failings as President, he is and has always been a truly decent human being.
Does anyone have any information on the changes in equipment and uniform purchases of the military during the Bush Admin?
The mother of a Marine that works in my office is claiming that although the military in general got an increase in pay, they have to buy ALL of their uniforms. I found this so utterly preposterous and distasteful that I didn’t even argue with her. She said he son had all the receipts to prove it, which I highly doubt. She did widdle it down to certain patches and outerwear after questions from others, but I still think she was exxagerating greatly.
Anyone have a link to an article or outlin in changes in military benefits during the Bush Admin? It would be greatly appreciated.
And NO - I am not surprised by Bush and Cheney and their love for our troops and comfort to their families. Despite all the problems I have with GWB, his steadfast support of our military and respect and honor to our fallen troops has always been apparent to me.
Good and decent men, our President and Vice President. I am grateful for them for their years of public service and I wish they and their families well as they re-enter private life. The history of their legacy is very clear in my mind and it is undescored by the deeds they do when no one is watching. One can only hope that as time passes, people will come to view them in a more favorable light.
And the Libs will begin mocking this in 3..2..1..
“Mr. Bush, for instance, has sent personal letters to the families of every one of the more than 4,000 troops who have died in the two wars, an enormous personal effort that consumed hours of his time.”
A gesture I’m sure he never felt burdened by.
I’m quite proud of our President, regardless of the political turmoil he has found himself in. One thing is for certain—he never waivered in his pride and support of our troops. This simple, yet thoughtful act shows that he’s not the troop murdering tyrant his opposition accuses him to be.
“I am not surprised by Bush and Cheney and their love for our troops and comfort to their families. Despite all the problems I have with GWB, his steadfast support of our military and respect and honor to our fallen troops has always been apparent to me.”
Ditto.
Unless things have changed, enlisted personnel get an initial issue of uniforms when they enter service. Thereafter, they replace worn items using their monthly uniform allowance. Officers receive a monetary amount to purchase uniforms when they are commissioned and replace them out of their regular pay. Field uniforms are issued by the member's unit and are returned to the unit when the member leaves the unit.
Hope this overview is still correct.
Unfortunately, it was exactly this trait that resulted in many of his worst decisions.
I bumped into W and wife in February 2004 while I was visiting a friend on Ward 56 at WRAMC. They were both visibly impacted and there were no media.

I said the same thing twice over the past three days. I disagreed with a lot but I never doubted that he may just be the most decent man ever in the WH.
