They said, "Go west," but many Californians are going north and east.
For the fourth year in a row, more residents left the Golden State than moved here from other states, according to a report released Wednesday by the California Department of Finance.
The outflow -- last seen during the economic and social struggles of the 1990s -- started when it became too expensive for most people to buy homes in the state, and has kept going throughout the bust with the loss of so many jobs.
The trend underscores the state's sour economy as layoffs continue, the fiscal strain on government grows and home values continue to decline.
Though more births and rising international immigration helped boost California's population a modest 1.16% last year, the state continued its steady stream of domestic out-migration -- the movement to other states of people who live here.
During the last fiscal year, 135,173 more people moved out of California than moved in from other states. Though just a drop in the bucket for a state of 38 million people, the trend remains significant because such declines usually occur when working Californians decide better opportunities lie elsewhere.
"I just gave up," said Grace Bryant, a former Glendora resident who fled to Texas after 18 months without consistent employment as a residential appraiser. "California is too much of a struggle."

Most of the blue states are in very similar situations both politically and economically. I’m now more concerned about the entire U.S. soon becoming a third world banana republic with no end in sight. Both the Fairness Doctrine and amnesty for illegal immigrants will profoundly suppress U.S. conservatism for a very long time, if not forever. A serious and successful civil war throughout the U.S. would bring conservatism back to life big time.
And the morons in government want to raise taxes higher and higher... And add to the endless regulation...
And they wonder why we are bankrupt...
Stupid is as stupid does...
I think it’s just about time to undock Texas from the fast-sinking Federal ship.
“I think its just about time to undock Texas from the fast-sinking Federal ship”
As a Texan stuck in California, I hope that you succeed.
Texas is the non-California.
Amazing, eh? Like the UK, such a hip and trendy place, with all the right, cool, fashionable ideas... None of that old-fashioned, religious crap... and yet the people are moving out. I haven’t been to California in decades, but I have noticed the UK. In theory, with all their advanced, fair, cross-dressing, gay, trans-gendered, animal-protecting, abortion-on-demand, politically correct legislation, at this point they should be the closest thing humanly possible to Shangrilà.
Well, at least the Brits have the lousy weather as an excuse, but California of California Dreamin’?
So much for societies legislating their way to bliss.
“Stupid is as stupid does...”
Don’t blame the politicians. They are thieves.
It’s the poeple who continue to vote for them who are the idiots.
Can’t argue with that...
Not to mention that most of them are high wage earners who can afford to leave; Those who hold up the tax base and support the remainder of those dead-beats who are still moving in for a free ride.
California will soon drop like a fly in a Raid factory.
You been in South Florida or from Los Angeles south to below San Diego? They both already are banana republics.
Debts are taxes on future generations that didn't vote, and did not get the jobs or services.
Young people are seriously screwed.
Schools that are worse for them then no schools at all.
Soon to be paying the pensions, SS, Medicare of us old people that they will never get.
Soldiers and prostitutes are their future. Another option is the Atlas Shrugged, which is happening now. As people retract from the economy, willingly or not, the turn over in sales slows down and money doesn't come into the gasping maw of the state. Ditto hours worked, decreased property values. On the other end, more people are collecting from the gunpoint schemes of unemployment taxes, and various assistance that the lovely state has promised. So, less in, more out, more borrow. Seeing this, the government has decided to.....borrow yet more, to get us out of our crippling debt. Debt is the critical point. Lastly, we may not have to do anything at all. After all this we may finally get our Dictator, our 'Lincoln'.
It’s liberals escaping a liberal state and bringing their liberalism to make other states liberal, too.
And Kali continues, with amazing success solving NV’s budget problems, and Ariz. and Utah’s and Colos’, and N.M.’S AND Monts’ and Idahos’ and Ore.s’ And Fla.s’ and Tex.s’ etc. etc. etc.
That is the first thing I thought when I seen this thread..God Help US...
We were part of the “first wave”, leaving Kali fornia in 1992.
I love the phrase “international immigration”!! Must be a new LA Times description for illegals.
hh
More taxpayers are moving out of California than in.
There, I fixed it :)
