Debra Markham, a Yamhill County deputy district attorney who made national news in 2007 for prosecuting two McMinnville seventh graders for swatting the bottoms of girls at their middle school, is now facing criminal charges herself.
Markham was arrested last month in Lincoln City for allegedly punching her husband in the face following a dispute. A Lincoln City police officer said Markham's husband, Curtis Cox, had blood on his forehead and cheek from the assault. She was transported to the local jail and charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment, according to the Lincoln County district attorney. Markham, 54, has entered a not guilty plea to the charges. Her attorney Katheryn Benfield couldn't be reached for comment.
Nine days after her arrest, Markham's nearly five-year employment with the Yamhill County District Attorney's Office ended. County officials said it was a personnel matter and declined comment.
According to a police report, a Lincoln City officer responded to the couple's home the evening of Nov. 16 and Cox told him Markham had punched him in the face. The officer noted that Cox had blood running down his face and the smell of alcohol on his breath. Markham told the officer her husband had been drinking and was bothering her. She told the officer her husband had put his hand around her neck and she'd pushed or punched him to make him go away. Markham's prosecution of the two seventh-grade boys for felony sex abuse made national headlines in the summer of 2007 after The Oregonian published a front-page examination of the case. In response to the story, people from across the United States sent the boys more than $60,000 to fight the charges.
A judge dismissed the case a month later after defense laywers reached a confidential out-of-court settlement with four of the girls named as victims in the complaint.
She sounds like a real peach. Can you imagine the poor fella that’s married to her? Yikes.
Sounds like she was projecting her own grown-up troubles on some little boys.

I agree...Debra Markham tried to make an example of those two boys and lost sight of the interests of society, it backfired on her.
I won’t prejudge her on this but it seems she may have overstepped the limits of the law she swore to uphold.
She also looks guilty as a mud fence.

The accused 7th graders would have faced years in juvenile detention and a lifetime listing on the sexual offender list.
They were strip-searched by police as many as nine times while in custody.
They were held up to ridicule by their classmates.
All for some silly hijinks that are indulged in by nearly every 13-year-old.
OTOH, 13-year-olds who join gangs, sell drugs, and use guns, would probably be let out on probation because the system is too busy to handle them...

I worked in the meat department of a small family owned grocery store.
My supervisor was an alcoholic and regularly came in late with a black eye given to him by his loving wife.
I seems as if the couple in question may have a similar and much more common than most people realize relationship.
Frightening...... If you had to be married to THAT it would require lots of alcohol to get through the days and nights......
