(CNSNews.com) - The $2.7 billion border fence authorized by Congress to be built along stretches of the U.S.-Mexico border is just over two-thirds finished--and should be mostly complete by the end of the year. But not everyone is happy with it.
Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.) said the fence that is being built is not the one Congress had in mind when it passed legislation in 2005 authorizing a double fence combined with a patrol road.
The law Congress enacted specifically directed that the Secretary of Homeland Security shall provide for at least 2 layers of reinforced fencing, the installation of additional physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras, and sensors along about 700 miles of the almost 2000-mile long border.
We originally passed legislation asking for 700 miles, Lungren told CNSNews.com Wednesday. It doesnt look like thats going to happen. What we do have is a good faith effort on the part of Homeland Security under Secretary Chertoff to actually end up before he leaves with about 370 miles of pedestrian fence, and probably 300 miles of vehicle fence.
The U.S. Border Patrol, part of the Department of Homeland Security, is overseeing construction of the barrier.
Weve just surpassed having 500 miles of fence along the border physically there and still maintain our goal of reaching 670 miles, Border Patrol Asst. Chief Lloyd Easterling told CNSNews.com Wednesday.
We anticipate having 90 to 95 percent of that done right around the end of the calendar year, he added.
There are stretches of fence in areas running from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, but the Border Patrol spokesman admits it isnt continuous along the 2000-mile frontier -- or even the eventual 670 mile length.

All along the way, those who could not gather enough votes to oppose the fence use the power of their elected and unelected offices to undercut the project’s success.
The shadow government thwarted the will of the people and the legislators.
It is an act of betrayal to the people of America to a foreign power (Mexico).
In other words, he wants still more illegals to pour in and depress wages of the U.S. working class...still further in the teeth of a Great Depression which is clearly imminent....
Thanks, I was just about to post this. There are comments by Duncan Hunter’s spokesman.
yeah, they are now ‘fiscal conservatives’...they really want to save us money...don’t want too much debt you know...yeah! That’s the ticket!
Can the President not order the Army Corps of Engineers to build the fence?

The threat that is Mexico has FINALLY hit the media!
You know its BAD, when they finally report it. Last night, CBS Nightly News with Couric did a solid 10 minutes on the WAR in MEXICO that has NOW spilled over our borders.....More deaths than Iraq....more beheadings (even showed the bodies!)....5th journalist killed this year....citizens in terror...and ALL the stuff weve been crying about for how many years??
Well, McCain, et als PC immigration experiment has finally left us with what I believe is a terrible dilemma. We will be overrun with an exodus from Mexico like nothing this nation has ever seen. We will either take them or we will be forced to send troops to Mexico to work along side a corrupt army and police.
One way or another a lot of people are going to die over some peoples greed/ideology.

WASHINGTON Mexican drug traffickers who pair up with gangs and use a sophisticated network to smuggle drugs across the border have become the biggest organized crime threat to the United States, the Justice Department reported Monday.
Most of the cocaine available in the U.S. is brought across the southwest border by Mexican groups, according to the annual report by the Justice Departments National Drug Intelligence Center.
Additionally, Mexican drug smugglers are increasingly working with Italian Mafia and other traditional organized crime groups nationwide, the report says.
Mexican drug trafficking organizations represent the greatest organized crime threat to the United States, the report concluded. The influence of Mexican drug trafficking organizations over domestic drug trafficking is unrivaled..[snip]

So, why couldn’t we just do what we were told to do?
Well, let’s see, Obama can make Mexico the 51st state via executive order, make the Mexican Army the new Civilian Service Corp, and deploy the real American military under the control of the governor of the new 51st state to protect its southern border, and safeguard the evacuation of the new 51st state citizens up to El Norte.

Important points about the fence:
1) Fencing the “corridors” is critical, because that is where the highest volume of traffic passes. This traffic cannot easily shift to other corridors.
2) Large parts of the border are essentially impassable naturally, as there are no roads on either side, no water or food, they are blocked to even 4WD vehicles.
3) The fence is to keep out Mexicans, not terrorists, which ironically could only be done by paying Mexicans a bounty to inform on non-Mexicans trying to cross the fence, which could be a highly effective and inexpensive trick.
4) The fence faces the law of diminishing returns. That is, it may stop 90% of potential crossers for the price, but to stop more than that, would almost double the price, so other techniques are more cost effective.
5) Much of the crossing or lack thereof is based on what the Mexican media is saying. They have great influence in increasing or decreasing efforts to cross.
6) One of the most extraordinary functions of the wall will be if Mexico declines into a violent civil war, which is a real possibility.
But they just gave themselves an "automatic" raise.
Uh huh.
Come on, dems! Don’t you have enough new voters yet?
But they just gave themselves an "automatic" raise.
Uh huh.
Who cares anymore? THERE’S NO WORK! You think these illegals want to STAY?
If anything, at this point the fence seems like a way to keep the illegals HERE, instewad of letting them OUT...
ping
Of course, he would rather keep Americans out of America.
That’s a good move zero. Over reach a little. 80% of the US citizenry wants the fence NOW! He’s playing into our hands with this sort of thing.
