California officials launch 'Green Chemistry' initiative
LA Times ^ | 12/17/08 | Margot Roosevelt

Is that laundry soap truly "environmentally friendly"? Was that mattress treated with toxic chemicals? Is that sweatsuit fashioned from organic cotton? Is that lipstick "natural"?

California officials launched a sweeping green initiative on Tuesday to inform consumers exactly how hundreds of thousands of products sold in the state are manufactured and transported and how safe their ingredients are.

The plan, which would require every product to reveal its "environmental footprint," envisions the most comprehensive regulations ever adopted for consumer goods.

"These recommendations usher in a new era of how we look at household products -- from our children's toys to the plastic we use to make shampoo bottles, to the varnish on our wood furniture," said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

--snip--

But after an 18-month effort to revamp that approach, "instead of paying attention to the toxic substances in our everyday products only when it comes time to throw them away in the landfill," Schwarzenegger said, "we will now pay attention . . . when the product is designed, manufactured, used and recycled."

Maureen F. Gorsen, director of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, said the administration would propose a law setting up a public database that could eventually allow consumers to scan a bar code on every product to determine how green it is -- or isn't.

With scanners at stores, or eventually on cellphones, purchasers could compare brands to figure out which one was manufactured, for instance, with coal-fired electricity in China and which one with solar power in California.

They could also determine how much greenhouse gas was emitted through its transportation by boat, plane or truck and whether its ingredients were the safest available and could be easily recycled.

Is the day far off where we all wear a ‘bar code’ and mingle at parties by scanning each other, in search of similar ‘products’ or ones with certain points of origin?

Just what CA needs: A new program when it's billions in debt. This is the kind of crap that makes me say: Stew in your own folly and don't you dare ask for my tax dollars to bail you out!

If they keep going, companies will stop selling their products in California. It will be to expensive. I think the auto makers should tell California that they understand their environmental requirements but.....”We can’t meet them so we will not violate your laws and will no longer sell our products in your State. Good luck.”

I work for a chemical company that sells industrial products in California and everywhere else in the world. If it were up to me, I’d offer our California sales reps another job and close all business there. Customers would have to bootleg it in form other states and would get no support from us.

Thank you for this post. I have had the best laugh in months over this. California is rapidly going broke, its economy is dying before our eyes and the contents of laundry soap is the newest crisis that GOVERNMENT must face. Business and population flee the state and Conan the Taxerian is going to test our hand lotion. As Bugs Bunny was quoted as saying, “That’s all folks.”

Super! That will really help me to AVOID all such products. Which I do now, but it’s more of a challenge. I’m starting to really LOVE red dye #2, MSG, corn oil made with genetically-addled corn, hydrogenated fats, etc.

Oh, and farm-raised salmon. One waiter told me, ‘This is farm-raised salmon, it is not wild.’ Aaarrrggggh.

Bring it on. Make a $tatement with your dollars.

Neat if they would do that, but the CA market’s so large, there’s not a prayer it would happen.

They've really gone nuts in 2008, haven't they?

FDR started this nonsense of letting boards and bureaus set laws and exact fines from individuals. They don't have to go through due process or anything.

We need to reboot this state.

Is not the governor a good example of the wisdom of the founders in barring his like from becoming President?

“We need to reboot this state”

You are about to. Did they halt all infrastructure spending today, as promised?

CA is out of cash.
