Does [Caroline] Kennedy deserve to be Senator?
WSTM-TV Syracuse ^ | December 16, 2008 | Laura Hand

Caroline Kennedy's interest in the U.S. Senate seat now held by Hillary Clinton is making for lots of talk, about whether having the Kennedy name is enough to qualify her for the position.

Kennedy, who's 51, has been a very private person until her very public support of Barack Obama, and this week she's saying publicly she's interested.

Reaction here in Syracuse: Outgoing Congressman Jim Walsh, honored by the Onondaga County Legislature for 20 years of service to the area, says 'Well, I think you have to earn this." He points to Clinton's tenure and asks 'Why did she come here initially?' Walsh now thinks we should ask, 'Why is Caroline Kennedy interested?"

Incoming 25th District Congressman Dan Maffei is noncommittal on who he'd support, saying it's the Governor's decision. Action News caught up with him, as he was touring Sensis Corporation in East Syracuse, learning more about big employers in the district. Maffei says he has tremendous admiration for Caroline Kennedy, and that she could do anything she wants, including being a U.S. Senator, but he also says "I like her as a candidate, but I like other candidates, too."

Governor David Paterson will make the appointment, but Senator Clinton has indicated she will not vacate the position until her confirmation hearings.

What, besides her last name and father, makes her any more qualified for such a high position. I can think of dozens of FReepers that'd make a better senator. Why doesn't Paterson have an "American Idol" type competition and the winner is appointed?

At this point, it is all about finding a rubber stamping drone to follow Reid’s orders, and a competent staffer can be hired to insert the appropriate pork to any bill.

How hard could it be to be a Senator in a hyper-partisan era?

New York put Clinton in, there’s no reason to believe they wont do the same for Kennedy. It’s sick, but it the truth.

She’s about as qualified as John F. Kennedy is.

He77-— 80% of the people there now don’t deserve to be Senators.

But at least most of them ‘earned’ it by conning enough people into voting for them.

Given the preponderance of twits and crooks (and crooked twits) that are in the Senate now, I don’t see Caroline Kennedy as making matters much worse.

She wrote a big, fat book on the sacred, Constitutional Right to Kill Babies. What more could she do to prove that she deserves to be in the Senate?

Does [Caroline] Kennedy deserve to be Senator?

About as much as Chelsea Clinton or Amy Carter.

New York has already heaped enough shame on their own heads by electing Hillary Clinton twice. There is no need to double the indignity by plucking Caroline Kennedy out of thin air to deposit her in the Senate.

When Hillary landed in New York, she displaced Nita Lowey, who probably would have won that Senate seat at a walk. Why isn’t Congressman Lowey at the top of the list, now that Hillary is leaving? (Not that I am a tremendous fan of Nita Lowey, mind you...)

Actually, the best person for the job, bar none, is Congressman Pete King. Unfortunately, he has an (R) problem.
