HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A little boy's murder that shocked parents everywhere, launched a national television crusade and confounded detectives for more than two decades may finally be solved.

Hollywood police today are expected to identify Ottis Toole as the killer of Adam Walsh, the 6-year old snatched from a Sears store at the Hollywood Mall on July 27, 1981.

Adam's severed head turned up two weeks later in Vero Beach and his body has never been found.

I have seen adorable little "back packs" shaped like animals with "leashes" attached. Parents had them on their children at fairs. I saw parents who truly cared about their children.

I guess they're available at Walmart. My nephew and his wife are expecting twins and they already have a little guy not yet age two. I'm getting them all those leashes. They're gonna need them.

Tragedy doesn't even come close to describing the Adam Walsh murder.

Sadly, I have been in a quandry once or twice where I came upon a lost chld in a mall or a park and am terrified to help the poor little child because I didn't want to be put in a spot where I could be accused of kid touching. Luckily, there were always a few other adults around and I was able to call them over while someone went to look for the parents. Never be alone with a child. If other adults were not around, I wouldn't know what to do. Ironically, they are probably safer with me than 99.9% of people.

My son practically has secret service protection-my wife never, ever, leaves him out of sight.

It’s up to the Lord to decide on that.

My mother would take me shopping at the Hollywood Fashion Mall as a child all of the time. This is before the Broward Mall even was open and was a cow pasture. We had shopped at that Sears the day before.

Most queers get their start by being sexually abused as a child. When they grow up they do the exact same thing to other kids.

Queers should be in either a nut house ( until cured) or in prison.

My son is the same age as yours. One time I could not find him anywhere. Finally, after almost reaching panic stage, I found him, sound asleep under his bed. I remember how upset it made me when they discovered that poor little Adam had been murdered. It was so horrible. I’ll never forget that.

Your post reminds me of a fascinating interview I heard on National Public Radio (I think it was NPR) some years ago about Mark David Chapman -- the guy who murdered John Lennon in New York City back in 1980.

The interview was with a psychiatrist who specialized in high-profile murder cases. The guy spent about 20 minutes talking about various interesting angles of the case, and about Chapman himself.

The interviewer asked the psychiatrist what his assessment of Chapman was. I'll paraphrase the end of the conversation as best I can:

"There's no doubt he is an evil man," the psychiatrist said.

"You mean he is crazy . . . psychotic?" the interviewer asked.

"No -- I mean he is evil. Some people with religious inclinations might use a term like 'possessed' to describe him. There is no clinical diagnosis for this, and some in my profession would call him 'psychotic' because they refuse to recognize evil for what it is, but I can assure you that it does exist -- and there are a lot of people out there like him."

WOW.

Of course Chapman is evil. Yoko was standing right next to him and she didn't even get a single bullet.

Is “Code Adam” named after Adam Walsh?

You’re certainly correct that most gay men would be horrified by this case, but then I’m certain most bi-polar people would be horrified by it too and no one is declaring them to be perfect examples of mental health.

Whenever we took my youngest son to the mall or a place with large crowds we put him on a leash. Made my own. 4 ft of narrow rope with a swivel hook that attached to his belt and loop around my wrist at the other end.

Got some snarky remarks but ignored them. He had a 4ft radius to range and I knew EXACTLY where he was at all times.

He was an extremely ACTIVE little boy.

I’ve had to take more than one lost child to a service desk somewhere. I’ve never hesitated to do so.

He was a partner in a hotel management company up until some monster took his son away from him. He does a fantastic job, a real natural.

IIRC, all of the folks on Mythbusters were strictly behind the camera types or even from outside the industry. The hosts and the two men on the build crew were FX techs and Kari Byron was a sculptor.

I wish we had thought of this when our grandson was little. He was autistic and had to be watched every minute. His parents also had to keep the doors locked high up so he could not open the doors as he would run away.

He's fine now and in college but it was a challenge.

These leashes are going to be on my baby gift list from now on.

My daughter got away from me at Menards once, and a cashier watched her run right past as she headed out a side door into the mall. I ran out, got my daughter back wit my parade ground voice...went to the cashier and asked why she had let a toddler run past her like that. She told me it wasn’t her job to tae care of that sort of thing, and seemed pretty miffed that I thought it was her job.

I went up front to the service desk and the manager on duty thought it wasn’t the cashier’s job either, and also seemed miffed. I was mystified, because I had been polite and not raised my voice or anything, yet these two were treating me like a rude little nuisance.

That afternoon I called and talked to the general manager. I’m not exaggerating when I say he seemed absolutely horrified. I don’t know for certain that he fired those two idiots, but I know I never saw them there again. Given that I have always had excellent service at Menards other than this, I don’t know how they lasted as long as they did.

Would they be horrified? Possibly. Would they deny the link between homosexuality and serial killers, suicide, alcoholism, drug abuse and relationship violence? Most definitely.
