NEW DELHI (AFP) India is to station a naval surveillance aircraft in the Gulf of Aden to boost its anti-piracy efforts in the region, a newspaper report on Sunday quoted a military officer as saying.
The plans come after an Indian warship on patrol in the region captured 23 Somali and Yemeni pirates trying to hijack an Ethiopian flag-bearing merchant vessel.
"Our plan is to base a maritime reconnaissance aircraft at Djibouti," the Times of India quoted the unnamed senior naval officer as saying.
There was no immediate official confirmation of the report.
The navy said that on Saturday its warship Mysore had dispatched helicopter-borne commandos to help the MV Gibe, which had sent a distress call as it came under fire from two pirate boats.

Extending their sphere of influence.
Interesting.
Well, I kept saying that they should get military aircraft involved for a long time. Some Freepers said that this was either too complicated or more trouble than it was worth... LOL...
Finally, it looks like some of the idiots in power *might* be getting the right idea. Next, I hope, they add planes that can *shoot* at the pirates... LOL...
I can see the new order that W has wrought.....
Look east young man...... mid and beyond
Good, in some ways, a strong India is very much in the interests of the United States.

Yes. If there is a power to balance the Chicoms and the Muslim Middle East it’s India.
I knew intuitively the Indian Navy had been designated the Pirate Police but had no reference. The Stratfor report not only tells the tale, but expands on it. The Europeans were excluded as was China.
W has upended the world order.
Think East...... mid and further.
I’m liking these guys more and more.
A country with the balls to go after the pirates. Amazing.
Thank you for noticing. This is the first mention of this I've seen on FR. The last eight years have been nothing less than a re-alignment of US interests. The 'anti-Americanism' promoted by the dems, euros, and the MSM are little more than a reaction to same. I think that's pretty important. Obama had better get his shit together fast.
Good training
Partially, yes.
But they also, as many do, have a vested interest in keeping those waters safe. And they are less encumbered by internal politics and certain treaties than other nations.
I personally imagine they have the backing of someone, probably the US, behind the scenes.
Surveillance is the first step.
A-10's to add the finishing torches.
Think of a ... what's the right word for this... memorandum of understanding maybe.. between the US, Japan, Britain, and India, concerning maritime and trade security issues. That's what I'm thinking, but I live in Illinois, a long way from civilization.
W changed the game completely. He obsoleted all old worn out diplomatic ruts that prevented any change or progress. When the game changed, the old rules were meaningless.
The Rats either didn't realize or would not admit the sweeping nature of the new order. Anti Arab FReepers shout me down not realizing their Islamic bigotry that to be Arab is not to be fanatic. They ignore or poo poo the growth and fantastic progress in the Gulf States.n
There was a post the last day or two where a US General is completing the years old training of a new Palestinian security force insulated from the old ways. The training of this essentially military force took place in Jordan. The old worn out way was abandoned and completely new approach was taken. It seems to be working even if not acknowledged.
Iraq is secure. W and General Tommy Franks conquered Baghdad. That is a historical event of Biblical proportions. That means that a big step to the security of the Gulf states is in place. Iraq will soon join the GCC as a full and welcome member. Afghanistan is not secure, but it is a different place. There are enough successful drone led raids into Pakistan to serve as precedent show the way forward.
The Stratfor report noted in this thread showed W's leadership by forming a coalition of capable and willing states to sit down in Washington and put heads together, appoint and accept a bid to take on the job of vanquishing the pirates. Note India is operating out of the secure and very well cultivated facilities in Djibouti. W did the developing and the cultivating. He allowed the creation of an Africa command.
Meanwhile in the Gulf there is economic progress on a fantastic scale. They are constructing the tallest building in the world, taller than Malaysia or Taiwan or America. East dust Euros. Bahrain is making a bid for the financial hub of the world. Take that Paris.
Across the way, India has thrown off the old tired and unworkable economic thought and is allowing capitalism to begin to flourish. The combo of Gulf States where many many Indians are employed and the Indian subcontinent have he potential to eclipse old Europe. It is happening now.
W changed world history. Rats and bitter conservative FReepers are fools to not acknowledge that fact.
I have been asserting the same thing for quite some time. A squadron of A10 Warthogs out of Djibuti would be ideal.
Very true! I think it would put short work to those pirates... LOL...
