The Lost John Lennon Interview
"Power to the People"
TA (interviewer): In a way you were even thinking about politics when you seemed to be knocking revolution?
JL (Lennon): Ah, sure, 'Revolution' . There were two versions of that song but the underground left only picked up on the one that said 'count me out'. The original version which ends up on the LP said 'count me in' too; I put in both because I wasn't sure. There was a third version that was just abstract, musique concrete, kind of loops and that, people screaming. I thought I was painting in sound a picture of revolution--but I made a mistake, you know. The mistake was that it was anti-revolution.
On the version released as a single I said 'when you talk about destruction you can count me out'. I didn't want to get killed. I didn't really know that much about the Maoists, but I just knew that they seemed to be so few and yet they painted themselves green and stood in front of the police waiting to get picked off. I just thought it was unsubtle, you know. I thought the original Communist revolutionaries coordinated themselves a bit better and didn't go around shouting about it. That was how I felt--I was really asking a question. As someone from the working class I was always interested in Russia and China and everything that related to the working class, even though I was playing the capitalist game.

John Lennon lyrics - Power To The People
Album: Shaved Fish
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Say you want a revolution
We better get on right away
Well you get on your feet
And out on the street
Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
A million workers working for nothing
You better give 'em what they really own
We got to put you down
When we come into town
Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
I gotta ask you comrades and brothers
How do you treat you own woman back home
She got to be herself
So she can free herself
Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Now, now, now, now
Oh well, power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Yeah, power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Oh, yeah. Ringo Starr. "You're sixteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine."
ROFLOL! I loved that song but wasn’t 16 yet. Never thought of it that way? Just checked Wikipedia for his bio and am a little freaked out now that he is older than my Mom!
“Everything Government touches turns to s__t.”
- Ringo Starr
I need to find a coffee mug with that epigram.
Paul has been pathetic for quite a while. It’s getting worse.....
Yea, this is the same guy who wrote (I guess) and performed such musical treasures, after the Beatles split, as . . .
“Someone’s Knocking at the door, someone’s ringing a bell, do a favor, let ‘em in. . .
And “We’re So Sorry, Uncle Albert.”
or
“Band On The Run.”
His music sucked!!!
I did like most of the Beatles music, though.
Not only did I change the dial on the radio when I heard his stupid songs, but I also think his politics say a lot about him. He’s an avowed animal rights activist, who believes there should be no research on animals, no meat consumption, or harvesting of animals for any reason.
Of course his animal rights worshiping first wife, Linda, used every medical procedure (developed through animal research) to save her life once she developed breast cancer. I remember reading about Paul and Linda urging people to boycot the March of Dimes, other organizations that promoted animal research, before she was diagnosed.
They wrote good songs but people confused music with something more. Simple.
Ya, ya, ya. . . . Whatever, Paul. You are my least favorite Beatle, after the carrion beetle. Just move to France already and be passe.
I was goofing around with the Abbey Road vinyl album on an old record player, pushing it backward across the needle at half speed, and distinctly heard John and George say “Paul is brain dead” in unison.
Great, Ringo was the only one I thought was sane. Now he's a child molester. Sheesh!
If singing about 16-yr-olds makes one a pedophile, there are an awful lot of great rockabilly artists who are in that same boat as Ringo. A lot of songs got written about teenage females. If you're sayin' they were all written by pedophiles, that just about destroys my faith in the good ol' rock-n-roll of the 50's!
I mean, geez, next you'll be telling me that Jerry Lee Lewis had a thing for underage girls.... oh, wait...
“Suffragette” wasn’t bad.
C,mom. Would or could Paulie write a ditty like this one:
“Woman is the Nigger of the World”
Words and Music by John Lennon
Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is...think about it
Woman is the nigger of the world
Think about it...do something about it
We make her paint her face and dance
If she won’t be a slave, we say that she don’t love us
If shes real, we say shes trying to be a man
While putting her down, we pretend that she’s above us
Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don’t believe me, take a look at the one you’re with
Woman is the slave of the slaves
Ah, yeah...better scream about it
We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that she’s too unworldly to be our friend
Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don’t believe me, take a look at the one you’re with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah...alright...hit it!
We insult her every day on tv
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When shes young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb
Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is...if you don’t believe me, take a look at the one you’re with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yes she is...if you believe me, you better scream about it
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
exactly..
Bestowing knighthood upon pop stars just confirms the irrelevancy and meaninglessness of knighthood.
All this time we thought Paul was the walrus, when in fact he was the jackass.
For sure - have no fear - my tongue was very much in cheek when I wrote that! I’m sure over the course of history some folks were knighted for real and serious accomplishments but I would guess many others were knighted for belonging to the right clubs and being born to the right people.
