OJ Simpson Paid Off Witness, Investigator Tells Court (bribe was Hall of Fame ring)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 12/12/08 | Harriet Ryan

Posted on 12/13/2008 10:27:13 AM PST by lewisglad

A key witness in O.J. Simpson's Las Vegas trial acknowledged to a Nevada investigator that the former NFL star paid him off, the investigator told a judge in Santa Monica this morning.

The investigator from the Clark County district attorney's office said Alfred Beardsley admitted that Simpson gave him his Hall of Fame ring in exchange for altering his testimony to help the defense

I asked what did you get to change your testimony," said Bill Falkner, who worked with prosecutors building the armed robbery and kidnapping case against Simpson.

The answer, he said, was the Hall of Fame ring.

The allegation came at a civil court hearing in which attorneys for Fred Goldman asked a judge to order Beardsley to turn over the ring to help satisfy a $33.5-million wrongful-death judgment against Simpson.

A jury acquitted Simpson of the 1994 murders of Goldman's son, Ron, and Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. A civil jury later found him liable for the deaths.

Beardsley attended the hearing, but when summoned to the witness stand, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and refused to testify. His attorney said he instructed him not to answer questions because of rumors he heard about a grand jury investigation targeting Beardsley in Las Vegas

Simpson was sentenced a week ago to 33 years in prison. A jury convicted him in October of armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges stemming from a confrontation with Beardsley and another memorabilia dealer in a casino hotel room last year.

Prosecutors called Beardsley as a witness, but were taken aback when he testified that someone had tampered with an audio recording critical to their case.

Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg ordered him back to court next Friday to hand over the ring.

I still don’t understand this, and I am not making any excuses whatsoever for this dope, but can someone please explain to me why a person who is/was as talented as OJ was on the field, who had it all even after he retired, endorsements, movies, etc., just allowed himself to degenerate all the way down like he has? Did his mind snap or what?

It’s kinda like laying track for the railroad. Once the tracks are placed it’s pretty damn hard to change the routing. I think OJ was derailed a long long time ago; long before he gained ‘fame’ in sports, commercial endorsements, or the movie(s).

He actually was always a thug. His fame just made it harder to detect. The man never changed this was always his MO.

In most cases I would agree with you, but there has to be something more here than just drugs. Or maybe not. All Iknow is that if I had just 1/10th of that guy’s talent I wouldn’t be here on a Saturday afternoon at work taking a break just to type in comments on Free Republic!

You know, I’ve been on OJ’s butt as much as anyone here. However, he is paying for his mistakes and crimes. I’m getting a little weary of Fred Goldman and his relentless dogging of OJ’s material wealth: It is not going to bring Ron Goldman back to life. And, in case Fred didn’t notice, Nicole was murdered also. Fred Goldman reminds me of some Old Testament or Greek tragedy characters who become deranged with out-of-control vengeance.

And, as for Beardsley, oh dear ... are we now to believe everything he says?

You need to add Jesse Jackson Jr to this lineup, IMO.

I support the Goldman’s in getting every last postage stamp that OJ owns or controls.

OJ is a monster. He treated every woman in his life in a very hard physical manner thru out his whole life.

Nicole was beaten again and again by OJ. Why she stayed with him for as long as she did is beyond my ability to comprehend. I know she isn’t alone in doing this, but as a woman, I have no patience for the returning to the abuser syndrome that so many women practice.

She could have left him years earlier, and gone into hiding to save her neck.
Ron Goldman was doing nothing wrong. He was only returning sunglasses she left behind at the restaurant.

I am personally hoping that OJ ends up at the Nevada prison at Ely. Out in the middle of nowhere, and a long, boring drive from Elko- Carson City- or Las Vegas for any of his “friends and family” to “visit” him.
I also hope some dude who is even meaner gets his hands on OJ in the prison. Somehow, I don’t think he will live long enough to serve 33 years.

I lay this partly on the doorstep of the Brown family. They KNEW what was going on. Denise Brown personally witnessed her own sister being abused by OJ. He bought her parents a house. They enjoyed a lifestyle they would not otherwise have had, and letting Nicole be abused was the price paid.

Arrogance.

He was use to doing/getting whatever he pleased. When someone got in the way of what he wanted he felt wronged and did something about it.

I could never pass any kind of judgement on the Goldmans. Imagine the killer of your son walking free on the golf course and nailing young sluts who look like the ex-wife he murdered, except their heads are attached to their necks.

The Goldmans deserve a medal for not killing the SOB, who knows how you would react? Finding any fault with the Goldmans is twisted.

I can’t agree with that.

Anyone that has this kind of family experience can tell you there was nothing they could do. The family can provide a way out and beg them to take it, but often the abused won’t do it. There’s no easy answer.
