[Laredo, Texas:] Rest stop prepared for more than 100,000 paisanos

The city of Laredo is preparing for paisanos to visit the Gateway City next week.

The paisano rest stop will be opening and officials say this year they are more prepared for this 48-hour event.

" We have made a bigger effort this year to look at the big picture to see overall how they impact our community”

It’s a bi-national project offered only in the gateway city.

The paisano rest stop offers assistance to travelers headed to Mexico.

This year officials are expecting more than one hundred thousand paisanos to cross our border.

" We have seen an influx of paisanos since October and we've seen it all through November and in December we expect a bigger influx."

The more paisanos come through... The more traffic congestion they create.

"Last year police was very busy with the amount of traffic on i-35. This year they are using this exit for all the paisanos traveling in the gateway city."

" Well motorists can travel south on Santa Maria all the way towards bridge one or take mines road north towards the bridge there on mines road area."

Meanwhile officials say some paisanos will not be returning back to the United States, because of the economic problem.

"Muchos si han comentado sobre la crisis que esta pasando ahorita en Estados Unidos."

This councilman from Nuevo Laredo says the problem paisanos are facing is that they're cutting their hours at their jobs in the United States.

So they will stay in Mexico and find another job there.

In the meantime, officials have advice to give the paisanos.

"We are asking people to make sure they have all the documents necessary you need a birth certificate and a photo id a passport will do."

Customs and border protection say they have all their lanes open and will have the Columbia Bridge open after midnight.

Also Mexican officials say they will also keep their bridges open until three in the morning.

...motorists can travel south on Santa Maria all the way towards bridge one or take Mines Road north towards the bridge there...

Mines Road is nothing but trucks, wall-to-wall MEXICAN trucks.
Anyone driving a regular car on that road better be prepared to get squashed.

Mexican “Paisanos” are countrymen.

The “roadrunner” (cited in print from 1856) or “chaparral bird” is often called the “paisano” (cited in print from 1844 or 1853) in Texas.

Make it one big party....then place the army at the border and check every last one of them for citizenship, or green card when they try to return.

Si. It’s their annual migration home for the holidays.

Some say the paisanos will not be returning back to the United States, because of the economic problems.

There is a “Paisano Pass” on the highway between Marfa and Alpine. I imagine that name goes back a ways, too.
